Brand by Henrik Ibsen( Book )

325 editions published between 1866 and 2019 in 16 languages and held by 2,923 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Brand was Ibsen's first masterpiece, a poetic drama composed in 1865 and published to tremendous critical and popular acclaim. The unsparing vision of a priest driven by faith to risk and witness the deaths of his wife and child gives Brand its icy ferocity. When he was writing it in Italy, Ibsen declared: 'It is blessedly peaceful out here; no one I know; I read nothing but the Bible ... ' Geoffrey Hill provides a new Preface to this third and revised edition of his great stage version of Brand."--Jacket

But the tide is turning, an English ship is coming down the fjord, and the undercurrents threaten to drag a whole family beneath the surface in this passionate and sweeping drama. Ellida must choose between the solid and reliable values of the land and the fluid, mysterious and frightening attraction of the sea
The wild duck by Henrik Ibsen( Book )

414 editions published between 1884 and 2020 in 15 languages and held by 2,129 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The only play in which Ibsen denies the validity of revolt, The Wild Duck suggests that under certain conditions, domestic falsehoods are entirely necessary to survival
Rosmersholm by Henrik Ibsen( )

241 editions published between 1800 and 2021 in 18 languages and held by 2,013 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Johannes Rosmer has resigned as parish priest following the suicide of his wife. But his increasingly liberal ideas make him an object of suspicion to the local worthies, who also disapprove of the presence in his house of a much younger woman, Rebecca West, formerly his wife's companion. As their relationship deepens and their isolation builds, the increasing moral pressures they face force them inexorably towards their fate." "Rosmersholm presents a portrait of idealism and democracy floundering in a society of conservatism and opportunism." "Mike Poulton's new version of Ibsen's Rosmersholm premiered at the Almeida Theatre, London, with Helen McCrory and Paul Hilton, directed by Anthony Page."--BOOK JACKET

The pillars of society by Henrik Ibsen( )

211 editions published between 1872 and 2021 in 9 languages and held by 1,698 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Pillars of Society (original Norwegian title: Samfundets stoslash;tter) is an 1877 play written by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. Ibsen had great trouble with the writing of this play which came before the series of masterpieces which made him famous throughout the world. The ending is the most criticised feature, since Bernick is clearly guilty of attempted murder but gets off unscathed, but successfully illustrates that the rich and powerful are often selfish and corrupt. - Excerpted from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ghosts (original Norwegian title: Gengangere) is a play by the Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. It was written in 1881 and first staged in 1882. Like many of Ibsen's better-known plays, Ghosts is a scathing commentary on 19th century morality. Ibsen disliked the translator William Archer's use of the word 'Ghosts' as the play's title, whereas the Norwegian "Gengangere" would be more accurately translated as "The Revenants"
