The languages of native North America by Marianne Mithun( Book )

32 editions published between 1999 and 2009 in English and held by 782 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book provides an authoritative survey of the several hundred languages indigenous to North America. These languages show tremendous genetic and typological diversity, and offer abundant opportunities for expanding our understanding of the shapes that human language can take. Part I of the book provides an overview of structural features of particular interest, concentrating on those that are cross-linguistically unusual or unusually well developed. Part II catalogues the languages by family, detailing genetic relationships, the locations and numbers of speakers, major published literature, and structural highlights. Included are languages that have arisen in contact situations: pidgins, creoles, and mixed languages."--Jacket

The Oxford handbook of polysynthesis( Book )

13 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 173 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This handbook offers an extensive crosslinguistic and cross-theoretical survey of polysynthetic languages, in which single multi-morpheme verb forms can express what would be whole sentences in English. These languages and the problems they raise for linguistic analyses have long featured prominently in language descriptions, and yet the essence of polysynthesis remains under discussion, right down to whether it delineates a distinct, coherent type, rather than an assortment of frequently co-occurring traits. Chapters in the first part of the handbook relate polysynthesis to other issues central to linguistics, such as complexity, the definition of the word, the nature of the lexicon, idiomaticity, and to typological features such as argument structure and head marking. Part two contains areal studies of those geographical regions of the world where polysynthesis is particularly common, such as the Arctic and Sub-Arctic and northern Australia

Preservation of North American Indian Languages by Marianne Mithun( Book )

1 edition published in 1993 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A discussion of the crisis in preservation of North American Indian languages looks at a variety of general and specific issues. First, it examines briefly current efforts by international organizations for maintenance of endangered languages worldwide. The discussion then turns to North American Indian languages, and particularly to three issues: (1) how to set priorities about which languages and varieties of languages to document, and the relationship between linguists and the community in this effort; (2) the kinds of cooperative projects that have been successful to date; and (3) the social and professional responsibility of the linguist, as a scientist and as a teacher of future researchers. The urgency of the problem is emphasized. (MSE)
