Race for the South Pole : the expedition diaries of Scott and Amundsen by Roland Huntford( )

22 editions published between 2010 and 2014 in English and held by 1,281 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Side by side, day by day, Huntford lets Scott and Amundsen speak for themselves, placing the diary entries of each (Scott's family had subtely edited the original). He includes superb original maps and photographs, and the never-before-translated diary of Amudsen's charismatic lead skier, Olav Bjaalund, which he translated, and an excellent introduction setting the scene. Scott, not surprisingly, pales compared to the easy competence of the Norwegians, who treated the whole thing, as Huntford explains, as a sporting contest

Two planks and a passion : the dramatic history of skiing by Roland Huntford( Book )

17 editions published between 2008 and 2013 in English and held by 434 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Roland Huntford's history of the ski begins 20,000 years ago in the last ice age on the icy tundra of an unformed earth. Man is a travelling animal, and on these icy slopes siding began as a means of survival." "This is the story of how siding evolved into a modern recreation from a prehistoric struggle for survival, Huntford puts the history of skiing into its social and political contexts, illustrating its spread across the globe and importance in all facets of life. It is the first comprehensive history of skiing to make use of original Old Norse and Russian sources, as well as using ancient Greek, Roman, Chinese and Arabic works. Huntford draws on his vast knowledge of Scandinavian history and politics as well as his unique insight into polar exploration to produce the definitive history of the ski."--Jacket

Behind the great polar explorers of the early twentieth century?Amundsen, Shackleton, Scott in the South, and Peary in the North?looms the spirit of Fridtjof Nansen, the mentor of them all. Sea of darkness by Roland Huntford( Book )

4 editions published in 1975 in English and held by 124 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A novel about Columbus' young manhood, which carries him to middle age and the successful end of his six-year appeal to Isabella for three ships to cross the Atlantic. Once afloat, the tale catches a lively wind. At an early age he became adept at hiding his feelings; young Christopher had to keep to himself the fantastic stories of Terra Nova told him by Ion Scolvessen, a Norwegian who had crossed the North Atlantic in a Viking ship and whose people had had commerce with the Indians of Vinland for over 500 years. Eventually, Columbus is hired to do some mapmaking for a cartographic studio, looks up Scolvessen, and sails with him to the Norse community in Terra Nova. Scolvessen is a moody, wittily sardonic mariner drawn with a certain sophistication. Christopher spends nearly a year in Terra Nova disguised as a Franciscan monk, sires an Indian child, and at last returns to Europe to outfit the return expedition. Huntford revives the old hypothesis of Columbus' preview of the New World and provides intrigue, adventure, devirgination-- all enjoyable."--Kirkus
