The conquest of the Illinois by George Rogers Clark( )

19 editions published between 1920 and 2018 in English and held by 2,033 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Most of us think of the American Revolutionary War as being fought only in the Colonies stretched along the Atlantic seaboard. But the region between the Ohio River and the Great Lakes, the Alleghenies and the Mississippi later known as the Old Northwest, figured quite prominently. A frontiersman, George Rogers Clark, carried out a campaign of conquest in the Illinois country that for enterprise, daring and determination is equal to any in our history. His feat was chiefly responsible for giving this area to the Colonies, rather than to Canada, under the Treaty of Paris in 1783

George Rogers Clark (1752-1818) was the most noted military commander in the Western campaigns of the Revolution. Draper envisioned that his biography on Clark would encompass the history of early Western exploration and settlement of Kentucky and areas north of the Ohio River, as well as Clark's career. As the largest series in The Draper Manuscripts, these highly significant papers include correspondence with Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, and Benjamin Harrison; Clark's diary covering the years 1776 to 1778; and his famed "Memoir" that gives his recollections of campaigns from 1776 to 1779. Draper's extensive notes and correspondence with Clark relatives, friends and associates, and other historians are also featured
