Philosophy and the ancient novel by International Conference on the Ancient Novel( )

2 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 1,122 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The papers assembled in this volume explore a relatively new area in scholarship on the ancient novel: the relationship between an ostensibly non-philosophical genre and philosophy. This approach opens up several original themes for further research and debate. Platonising fiction was popular in the Second Sophistic and it took a variety of forms, ranging from the intertextual to the allegorical, and discussions of the origins of the novel-genre in antiquity have centred on the role of Socratic dialogue in general and Plato's dialogues in particular as important precursors. The papers in this collection cover a variety of genres, ranging from the Greek and Roman novels to utopian narratives and fictional biographies, and seek by diverse methods to detect philosophical resonances in these texts
Education and the urban crisis by Frank Field( Book )

5 editions published between 1977 and 2012 in English and held by 402 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book consists of papers presented and discussions held at two Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation conferences on education and the urban crisis in Britain. Fundamental changes taking place in British cities are examined and are compared to urban problems in the United States. It is stated that the "urban crisis" is simply another way of referring to the persistence of poverty in Great Britain. The extent to which schools are contributing to or can be used to counter inner city poverty is addressed. Broad themes examined include falling educational attainment, violence in the schools, and the failure of schools to develop, among their pupils, skills which are in demand in the labor market. Declining reading ability of city students is discussed. Falling educational standards and achievement are related to the increase in behavioral problems in many schools. Government programs for dealing with urban school problems are reviewed. A number of suggestions are offered for improving the schools' ability to prepare their students for the British job market. Activities undertaken by the Gulbenkian Foundation to address problems in urban education are described. Ways the Foundation disseminates information about its contributions are discussed. (Gc)
Water and the Future of Humanity Revisiting Water Security by Gulbenkian Think Tank on Water and the Future of Humanity( )

1 edition published in 2013 in English and held by 361 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This unique, engaging, and highly authoritative volume enlightens readers on changes needed in the way society accesses, provides, and uses water. It further shines a light on changes needed in the way we use food, energy, and other goods and services in relation to water, and offers projections and recommendations, up to 2050, that apply to water access challenges facing the poor and the common misuse of water in industry, agriculture, and municipalities. Written by an unparalleled slate of experts convened by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the book takes on one of the most critical issues on the planet today. In a frank yet optimistic assessment of major developmental chalƯlenges, but also opportunities, facing future generations, the author elucidates linkages between water and a range of other drivers from various disciplinary and stakeholder perspectives. Ultimately portraying the belief that Humanity can harness its visionary abilities, technologies, and economic resources for increased wellbeing and sound stewardship of resources, the book presents an optimistic statement stressing actions scientists, policy makers, and consumers can and must take to meet the water manƯagement challenges of a warming planet anticipating nine billion inhabitants by 2050.
