Paul's idea of community : the early house churches in their historical setting by Robert Banks( Book )

48 editions published between 1979 and 2020 in 3 languages and held by 889 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

It is in Paul that the most profound and clearly developed understanding of community is found. Indeed, what the apostle has to say about community is relevant to far more than just the way people get together in churches. In this timely study, the author examines and clarifies Paul's idea of community, placing it in its historical context (comparing Paul and the Stoic and Epicurean and Cynical philosophers, the Hellenistic mystery cults, and first-century Judaism), and drawing out its significance both sociologically and theologically. According to him, the essence of Paul idea of community is freedom. The freedom that Christ brings to a person means not only independence (from selfish desires and from the law) but also dependence (for the freedom is given by Christ, not earned) and interdependence (it must be lived out in the community). Of the several images Paul uses to describe the community, the author focuses on two: body (depicting the goal of development or growth) and family (dpeicting the goal of harmony). He goes on to discuss the various aspects of the community: the physical expressions of community: "spiritual gifts" and their role in the community; the role of women and racial minorities in the community; and the relationship of Paul himself and his apostolic endeavours to the community. Many Christians have difficulty finding practical connections between faith and daily life. Sermons, Sunday schools, and study groups rarely address the issues, situations, and responsibilities of ordinary life, and theology seems detached from everyday concerns. In Redeeming the Routines, Robert Banks locates the reasons for the gap between faith and daily life. He then identifies activities that should be examined from a Christian perspective and suggests specific ways in which individuals and churches can bring their faith to bear on such matters
The church comes home by Robert Banks( Book )

14 editions published between 1986 and 2006 in English and Undetermined and held by 220 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In our modern dislocated society many are searching for a church experience that offers true Christian sharing, nurturing, and discipleship, in addition to teaching and worship. For many such people the answer is found in the home church: a small, committed group of often diverse people who meet together in homes to pray, eat, sing, study, and share their lives. Rob and Julia Banks have been involved with home churches for over twenty-five years, and they are wonderful guides to the world of the home church. Together they have led seminars and assisted congregations in developing this style of gathering in many parts of the world. Robert is also Professor of the Ministry of the Laity and Executive Director of the De Pree Leadership Center at Fuller Theological Seminary. He is the author of many books, including "Paul's Idea of Community: The Early House Churches in Their Cultural Setting." Julia coordinates the community house in which she and Rob live with a group of students. She is also active as a church planter and in building networks among house churches

Going to church in the first century : an eyewitness account by Robert Banks( Book )

15 editions published between 1980 and 2017 in 4 languages and held by 103 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This brief narrative attempts to depict what it was like to attend an early Christian gathering in the middle of the first century. Rome was chosen as the location because we know more about details of ordinary life there at that time than anywhere else. Aquila and Priscilla were selected as hosts of the church because their long-term connection with Paul meant that the gathering in their home would most probably follow the line his letters suggest. The material utilized in this study came from biblical and other literary sources, both Roman and Greek, and from archaeological and inscriptional evidence."--The Preface

Through the valley of the shadow : Australian women in war-torn China by Linda Banks( )

5 editions published in 2019 in English and held by 79 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This compelling collection tells five stories of young Australian women who served in times of armed conflict in early twentieth-century China. These courageous missionaries lived in the midst of pre-Boxer uprisings, the Republican revolution, clashes between regional warlords, Japanese occupation during World War II, and civil war between Nationalists and Communists. Suffering deprivation and hardship with the Chinese people, they were shot at and bombed, endured capture and imprisonment, and risked their lives to save others. Some were even killed. Working in villages, hospitals, schools, universities, orphanages, and refugee centers, these women helped shape the emergence of modern China. In partnership with local people they helped raise the status of women and develop educational, medical, and welfare institutions that exist to this day. Based on thorough first-hand research, visits to various sites in China, and including a number of historic photos, this book is written for anyone interested in the lives of people who made a difference to the world around them.
