"The Smithsonian Institution has been America's museum since 1846. What do its vast collections - from the ruby slippers to a piece of Plymouth Rock, first ladies' gowns to patchwork quilts, a Model T Ford to a customized Ford LTD low rider - tell Americans about themselves? In this illustrated guide to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, Steven Lubar and Kathleen M. Kendrick tell the stories behind more than 250 of the museum's treasures, many of them never before photographed for publication. These stories not only reveal what America as a nation has decided to save and why but also speak to changing visions of national identity."--Jacket

American enterprise : a history of business in America( Book )

3 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 368 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"What does it mean to be an American? What are American ideas and values? American Enterprise, the companion book to a major exhibition at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, aims to answer these questions about the American experience through an exploration of its economic and commercial history. It argues that by looking at the intersection of capitalism and democracy, we can see where we as a nation have come from and where we might be going in the future. Richly illustrated with images of objects from the museum's collections, American Enterprise includes an early Thomas Edison light bulb, a wheat thresher, a Barbie doll, a Google server, and many other goods and services that have shaped American culture. Historical and contemporary advertisements are also featured, emphasizing the evolution of the relationship between producers and consumers over time. Interspersed in the historical narrative are essays from today's industry leaders--including Sheila Bair, Adam Davidson, Bill Ford, Sally Greenberg, Fisk Johnson, Hank Paulson, Richard Trumka, and Pat Woertz--that pose provocative questions about the state of contemporary American business and society. American Enterprise is a multi-faceted survey of the nation's business heritage and corresponding social effects that is fundamental to an understanding of the lives of the American people, the history of the United States, and the nation's role in global affairs"--
G. Washington, a figure upon the stage by Margaret Brown Klapthor( Book )

6 editions published in 1982 in English and held by 362 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Smithsonian Institution is custodian of two important collections of Washington memorabilia. One came from the Lewis family in direct descent from Eleanor Parke Custis Lewis, granddaughter of Martha Washington and adopted child of Mount Vernon, and other from the Peter family in direct descent from Martha Parke Custis Peter, also a granddaughter of Martha Washington. Important pieces had been added from other private collectors to these rich holdings through the years. As there had been no major George Washington exhibition in many years, and never one by the Smithsonian Inistitution, it seemed appropriate to suggest that we present an exhibition which would assess George Washington--both the myth and the man--in terms of modern historiography. -- Preface

The spirit of invention : the story of the thinkers, creators, and dreamers who formed our nation by J. M Fenster( Book )

2 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 335 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An illustrated appreciation of America's spirit of invention, which introduces unique characters whose insistence on change for the better made America what it is today. This book is a fascinating examination of innovation as a driving characteristic of Americans from all eras and all walks of life. In this book we meet Gertrude Forbes, a sickly widow so poor she had to live in her aunt's attic, who overcame the odds to invent, among other things, an adjustable ironing board cover. We follow Cromwell Dixon, a fifteen-year-old from Columbus, Ohio, whose dreams of finding a way to fly inspired him to invent a bicycle-powered airship. We see John Dove, an African-American inventor, originating concepts integral to the compact disc. We learn about Purdue University, one of the earliest educational institutions to promote invention and engineering ideas. We eavesdrop on Thomas Edison in his laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey, and also find out about the beginnings of film colorization, a controversial process that adds tint to film. And we read about Luther Burbank and how he revolutionized plant breeding. The book even reviews the invention of illegal devices such as the "light wand," which induced slot machines to pay out on every spin, and we are introduced to a poker player who invented a "holdout" that allowed him to conceal cards in a shirt sleeve during games
