The Byzantine economy by Angeliki E Laiou( )

21 editions published between 2007 and 2010 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,167 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This is a survey of the economy of the Byzantine Empire from the fourth century AD to the fall of Constantinople in 1453. Organized chronologically, the book addresses themes such as demography, agriculture, manufacturing and the urban economy, trade, monetary developments, and the role of the state and ideology. It provides an overview of the economy with an emphasis on the economic actions of the state, the productive role of the city, and the role of non-state economic actors, such as landlords, artisans, and money-changers. The final chapter compares the Byzantine economy with the economics of western Europe and concludes that it was one of the most successful examples of a mixed economy in the pre-industrial world."--Jacket

Trade and markets in Byzantium( Book )

12 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 194 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

How are markets in antiquity to be characterized? As comparable to modern free markets, with differences in scale not quality? As controlled and dominated by the State? Or as a third way, in completely different terms, as free but regulated? In Trade and Markets in Byzantium seventeen scholars address these and related issues by reexamining and reinterpreting the material and textual record from Byzantium and its hinterland for local, regional, and interregional trade. Special emphasis is placed on local trade, which has been understudied. To comprehend the recovery of long-distance trade from its eighth-century nadir to the economic prosperity enjoyed in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, the authors analyze the variety and complexity of the exchange networks, the role of money as a measure of exchange, and the character of local markets. This collection of groundbreaking research will prove to be indispensable for anyone interested in economic history in antiquity and the medieval period
Byzantium and the other : relations and exchanges by Angeliki E Laiou( Book )

14 editions published between 2012 and 2018 in English and held by 184 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Angeliki Laiou (1941-2008), one of the leading Byzantinists of her generation, broke new ground in the study of the social and economic history of the Byzantine Empire. Byzantium and the Other: Relations and Exchanges, the second of three volumes to be published posthumously in the Variorum Collected Studies Series, brings together fourteen articles published between 1982 and 2012 that reflect her enduring interest in Byzantium's political, ideological, and commercial relations with its neighbours. The first three articles examine Byzantine attitudes and institutional responses to foreigners and strangers within the empire, while the next four concern Byzantium's response to the Crusades and, more generally, to questions of justice in the spheres of conflict and colonisation. The final seven articles investigate Byzantium's political and commercial relations with other regional and Mediterranean powers; particular emphasis is placed on Venice and Genoa, whose increasing involvement in the Byzantine economy so marked the final centuries of the empire's existence

Women, family and society in Byzantium by Angeliki E Laiou( Book )

6 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 136 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Angeliki Laiou (1941-2008), one of the leading Byzantinists of her generation, broke new ground in the study of the social and economic history of the Byzantine Empire. "Women, Family and Society in Byzantium", the first of three volumes to be published posthumously in the "Variorum Collected Studies Series", brings together eight articles published between 1993 and 2009. Demonstrating Professor Laiou's characteristic attention to the relationship between ideology and social practice, the first five articles concern the status of women as evidenced through legal, narrative, hagiographical, and archival sources, while the final three investigate conceptions of law and justice, the vocabulary and typology of peasant rebellions, and the form and evolution of political agreements in Byzantine society

12 editions published in 2006 in French and held by 80 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book considers a dramatic period (late 5th-early 8th centuries) in which the fall of the limes on the Danube and the settlement of Slavs led to the disappearance of cash exchanges in most of the Balkans. At the same time in Asia Minor, the Persian war and invasion (610-30) followed by the Arab thrust from 636 onward aggravated the decline of cities and of monetisation. Drawing on a long collaboration between scholars from the relevant countries, the book proposes a detailed inventory of most of known coin hoards (374) from the Balkans and Asia Minor, buried between 491 and 713. This documentation, classified according to Byzantine provinces, will be welcome by archaeologists and numismatists. It is introduced by regional and thematic commentaries intended for historians and is accompanied by numerous tables, charts and maps. Often related with insecurity, hoards partly date invasions and plot their inroads, while their geographical distribution gives evidence of the progressive retraction of monetary circulation. Finally, the consolidated material of these deposits (8 915 identified coins - 2 212 gold, 188 silver and 6 515 bronze) allows to outline the structure of issues, their evolution and their regional distribution.--P.
