Americans in Florence : Sargent and the American impressionists( Book )

13 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 319 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The relationship American impressionist painters had with Italy, particularly with Florence, was very intense between the mid nineteenth century and the start of the twentieth. After the Civil War, hundreds of painters came to Italy. Florence, Venice and Rome had by long tradition been the centre of the Grand Tour and were places made legendary by those who wanted to know and study the art of the past, while also exercising a powerful fascination because of their climate, landscape, atmosphere and people. The catalogue features painters who, though not explicitly adhering to the new impressionist language, were fundamental examples for the younger generations, including Winslow Homer, William Morris Hunt, John La Farge and Tomas Eakins. They were followed by great precursors such as John Singer Sargent, Mary Cassatt and James Abbott McNeill Whistler, who could lay claim to considerable cosmopolitanism. The heart of the book will consist of works by artists who stayed in Florence, among whom were some genuine exponents of the American impressionist group, the Ten American Painters (William Merrit Chase, John Henry Twachman, Frederick Childe Hassam), and by Franck Duveneck, who played a particularly important role in the relations between American and local artists, gathering a school around himself, the so-called 'Duveneck boys'. The link between the activity of the Americans in Florence and their compatriot intellectuals, collectors, writers and art critics will also be studied: Gertrude Stein, Mabel Dodge, Bernard Berenson, the brothers Henry and William James, Egisto Fabbri and his family, Mabel Hooper La Farge, Bancel La Farge, Charles Loeser and Edith Wharton."--Résumé de l'éditeur

Divine beauty : from Van Gogh to Chagall and Fontana by Italy) Palazzo Strozzi (Florence( Book )

7 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 111 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An unusual look at art in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Sacred art is traditionally linked with the period stretching from the Middle Ages to the seventeenth century. In reality, it has never completely vanished, and this book retraces its history in the years between the 1880s and 1950, both in Italy and abroad. Taking an unprecedented approach, Divine Beauty sets out to investigate the relationship between art and the Church, a connection that had been unbreakable in previous centuries and that seemed to have been lost in the modern era. This is a unique work, which brings together such great names as Paul Gauguin, Pablo Picasso, Auguste Rodin, Edvard Munch, Giovanni Segantini, and Lucio Fontana

1927, the return to Italy : Salvatore Ferragamo and the twentieth-century visual culture by Italy) Museo Salvatore Ferragamo (Florence( Book )

8 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 69 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In 1927, after more than a decade in the US, the great Italian designer Salvatore Ferragamo took an ocean liner back to his native land. Published on the 90th anniversary of his homecoming, this book takes Ferragamo's voyage as its guiding thread, offering a broad cultural overview of the 1920s'a decade now recognized as a crucible of experimentation, through artworks, advertising, clothing and fabric, as well as prototypes of the shoes that Ferragamo created in the 1920s. Ferragamo's homecoming coincided with a moment at which the word 'return' was especially meaningful in Italy, denoting a return to order in the arts; a return to professional skill; and to Italy's great cultural traditions. Developed across chapters, almost like a coming-of-age story, the book focuses precisely on this trend in the culture of the period, encompassing all of the cultural and social facets that distinguished Italy's rebirth after the Great War, on the eve of the Mussolini regime. Exhibition: Museo Salvatore Ferragamo, Firenze, Italy (19.05.2017- 02.05.2018)"--Publisher's description

9 editions published in 2011 in Italian and held by 59 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
