Explores the legacy of slavery on mother/daugher relationships in African Caribbean culture. As they pay tribute to their ancestors, a daughter asks her Caribbean- born mother why she was taught both Afro-Caribbean and European religious tradition. The mother admits that there was conflict about which ideology to teach, so a mix of Cumina, Catholicism and Anglicanism resulted. Though alienated by the beating she suffered as a child, the now-adult daughter describes her mother's understanding when, during college, she told her mother about her sexuality and her mother was lovingly accepting

Relocating by Victor Burgin( Book )

4 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 97 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Over the past thirty years Victor Burgin's work has established him as both a highly influential artist and a renowned theorist of the still and moving image. After thirteen years in the United States, Burgin recently returned to live and work in Britain. Burgin came to prominence as an originator of conceptual art, and was nominated for the Turner Prize shortly before his departure for the USA. This book offers a critical overview of a body of work that combines conceptual rigour with poetic elegance, and remains an essential reference for succeeding generations of artists."--Jacket
Starting at zero : Black Mountain College, 1933-57 by Mary Emma Harris( Book )

7 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 96 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Black Mountain College was the place where Buckminster Fuller demonstrated the geodesic dome and performed in Erik Satie's The Ruse of Medusa with Elaine de Kooning, Merce Cunningham, John Cage and the young Ray Johnson. It was where poet Charles Olson, painter Ben Shahn, composer Lou Harrison and dancer Katherine Litz explored the idea of the 'glyph', Cage created 'the first happening' with Cunningham and Robert Rauschenberg, and the Cunningham Dance Company was formed. In its last years it was the home to the Black Mountain poets, Robert Creeley and Jonathan Williams among them." "Conceived as an experiment in interdisciplinary education by a misfit classical academic, who drew on the ideas of A. N. Whitehead and John Dewey of encouraging learning through experience, it attracted the most remarkable roll-call of teachers and students. The first of these, Josef and Anni Albers, who arrived in 1933, virtually as refugees from Nazi Germany, became magnets for Bauhaus colleagues and then for a string of distinguished and emerging artists, writers, thinkers and musicians as a distinctively American avant-garde emerged in the wake of the Second World War." "Here five authors explore the history, the ideas and the impact of one of the most unlikely yet remarkable episodes in the arts of the twentieth century."--BOOK JACKET
