La Révolution français et les Juifs by Patrick Girard( Book )

13 editions published in 1989 in French and held by 164 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Traces the situation of the Jewish communities in France before the Revolution, attitudes towards Jews during the Enlightenment, and attempts to "reform" them. Stresses that the "Spanish" and "Portuguese" Jews living in France were already emancipated before the Revolution. Describes the struggle of Jewish leaders in this period (e.g. Cerf Berr, the leader of the Alsatian Jews) and Abbé Grégoire to obtain emancipation. Surveys the status of the Jews in south-west France, the Papal States, Alsace, Lorraine, and Metz. Some discriminatory decrees were adopted against the Jews of Alsace, reflecting increased antisemitism due to peasant indebtedness to the Jews. At the end of the Revolution the Jews were, in theory, equal French citizens, but in practice some decrees already anticipated the later Napoleonic anti-Jewish measures
