The Oxford dictionary of Byzantium( Book )

This is the standard research tool on 1,100 years of Byzantine history. Exhaustive in its coverage, entries on patriarchy and emperors coexist with entries on surgery, musical instruments, and the baking of bread, bringing to life this vastly important culture and empire, from the 4th century to the 15th
The material and the ideal : essays in medieval art and archaeology in honour of Jean-Michel Spieser( )

16 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 1,601 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Reflecting the diverse interests of Jean-Michel Spieser, his colleagues, students and friends contribute papers focused on topics ranging from the changing role of the apse and the layout of late antique basilicas to holy relics said to have been brought from Constantinople. Many of the articles address the nature and impact of specific media - goldsmiths' work, ivory and ceramics - while a group of highly original, broader studies is devoted to such larger issues as ritual display in the tenth century, the metaphorical significance of pottery and an interrogation of the supposed influence of Byzantine icons on Western medieval art. Throughout, the achievement of the authors is to move from concrete observations of particular objects to the larger meaning they held for those who commissioned and made use of them

The hand of the master : craftsmanship, ivory, and society in Byzantium (9th-11th centuries) by Anthony Cutler( Book )

15 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 518 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Cutler analyzes the normal working methods of Byzantine carvers, as well as aspects of craftsmanship that enable us to identify distinct hands. These observations are then made the basis of both a revised chronology and a more rigorous system of classification than has existed heretofore. But the recognition of particular sculptors is a means rather than an end in this book. Similarities and differences within this huge body of production allow answers to such broader questions as the functions of craftsmen in this society, their relations with clients and designers, and, ultimately, the significance of ivory in the visual culture of Byzantium

"The Salerno ivories clearly lie at the very heart of the complex nature of 'Mediterranean art' at a time of intense commercial and cultural exchange ... So many essential questions are still subject to debate: whether they were commissioned by a pope, an archbishop, or a powerful secular ruler; if they were carved in the eleventh of twelfth century; if this occurred in Salerno, Amalfi, Palermo, or Rome, in a monastery, at a court, or in an independent workshop; if they were part of an archiepiscopal throne, an antependium, a set of doors, or a reliquary."--Preface, p. 10
