1 edition published in 2003 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Between 1848 and 1872, landscape painter John Frederick Kensett (1816--1872) was understood to be one of the most important artists of his day. This study traces his public reputation and the sales of his paintings during his lifetime. The dissertation provides a case study of mid-nineteenth-century taste, and analyzes the way contemporary writers perceived and shaped culture of the period. Integral to their praise for Kensett was their emphasis upon values that avoided material concerns and demonstrated "refinement."
