The endless city : the urban age project by the London School of Economics and Deutsche Bank's Alfred Herrhausen Society by Richard Burdett( Book )

"At the turn of the twenty-first century, the world is faced with an unprecedented challenge. It must address a fundamental shift in the world's population towards the cities, and away from mankind's rural roots. Over the course of two years, a group of internationally renowned professionals from a variety of different disciplines and backgrounds gathered together in six world cities to take stock of the new urban condition and to offer an approach to dealing with it. The result was a sometimes passionate, always challenging and informed debate on how architects, urbanists, politicians and policy makers can constructively plan the infrastructure and development of the endless city, to promote a better social and economic life for its citizens."--Jacket

The 100 mile city by Deyan Sudjic( Book )

26 editions published between 1991 and 1993 in English and held by 527 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The thesis of this book is that a whole range of fundamental urban changes whose causes had been building up for some time took effect in the course of the 1980s and resulted in the recasting of the shape and character of the city. Some of these changes concerned the way people lived, some had an influence on the physical form of the city, and others were connected with the relationship of one city to another. This book deals with five cities in particular: London, Paris, Tokyo, New York and Los Angeles, though it touches on many others, and it seeks to make sense of the forces that are shaping all western cities. The five are the largest, the furthest evolved, and the most important of the industrial cities, a species that went through its most violent period of growth in the nineteenth century but which then, in many cases, atrophied. In these five however, while there has been some decay, their metamorphosis into a system of interlinked, but also antagonistic cities has been the real legacy of the 1980s. Together they dominated the world's economy and cultural life, but they also had to struggle to maintain their position, against each other and potential competitors."--Introduction, page 1

Ron Arad has challenged the boundaries of design for almost twenty years. His work was constantly inventive, witty and, above all, accessible. His recycling of ancient car seats to make the Rover chair and his beds made out of scaffolding captured the creative mood of the moment and caught the attention of a generation which had taken no previous interest in furniture design." "In the 1980s his output was defined by a prolific and inventive series of new chairs, tables and lamps that challenged the definitions of what design could be." "The book is illustrated with a wealth of striking images, many of them specially commissioned. Based on a series of episodes which focus on individual objects, families of designs, categories and activities, the book reflects Arad's own distinctive approach, offering a unique insight into the working process and creative thinking of this dazzlingly inventive designer. -- publisher's statement

Future Systems by Deyan Sudjic( Book )

13 editions published in 2006 in English and Undetermined and held by 285 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Can the ordinary be made unfamiliar and new? How can a simple object elevate the way in which one lives? Can structure and content blur seamlessly into one? Does every house have to have eight corners? These are only some of the questions posed and answered by the innovative architecture and design practice, Future Systems, that are breaking molds and boundaries worldwide. Future Systems, founded by Jan Kaplicky, is an architectural design practice established in 1979 that has become recognized worldwide for consistently challenging traditional preconceptions of space and demonstrating environmental concern and efficiency. They have surprised the architectural world with their daring forms and inventive design philosophy that merges modern ideas with natural shapes. The result is an uncompromised look that redefines architectural language while fusing contemporary form and function. The book presents a selection of work from the last twenty-five years, some previously unpublished. It celebrates Future Systems' finished work, as well as looks at more recent proposals and concepts that continue their forward-looking philosophy, such as the Maserati Museum, Modena (2004). Organized according to themes such as objects, houses, shopping and landmarks, this innovative format will also present well-known works in a new light. This book offers a fresh look at one of the 21st centuries most creative and innovative architecture and design firms. With a well-informed and accessible text by one of today's most respected architecture critics, this monograph is an essential addition to any design library. It is the perfect gift for students of architecture as well as anyone with an interest in the future of 21st century design
