Les origines du Gabou sont difficiles à cerner. Une telle lacune s'explique par le sort que le partage colonial a réservé à ce royaume. Il fut en effet partagé entre l'Angleterre, la France et le Portugal. Nous ne disposons pour ce faire que des seules traditions malinkés, mais celles-ci sont unanimes pour situer l'arrivée des Mandingues vers 1240, quand Soundjata lança ses armées à la conquête de l'Ouest. Ce royaume connaîtra cependant son vrai développement du XIIIe au XIXe siècle. Il englobait alors la région de haute et moyenne Casamance ainsi que le cours supérieur du fleuve Koliba. L'affrontement final avec les Peuls, en 1867, fut fatal au Gabou et causa la chute de sa capitale, Kansala. Une des premières conséquences en fut le triomphe de l'Islam dans la région. Mais la victoire peule allait être suivie de près par les conquêtes coloniales et le partage du Gabou
