"Throughout the course of the years that have elapsed since the publication of a small volume, Elements of thought, I have held in view the purpose of following it by another on the same subjects, but treated more at large. A time of absolute leisure, fitted for the due performance of such a task, I have waited for and never found. Yet, in place of a continuous season of leisure, there has been given me the leisure moments and the hours of many thoughtful years. During these years the principal subjects of Intellectual Philosophy have been constantly in my prospect, and the volume which is now offered to the public is the fruit of these meditations in this lapse of time. Intending to put into the reader's hand an elementary book of moderate size, such subjects only are introduced as might be presented apart from controversial references to books, either of the present time or of times past. Any such references, to be serviceable to the uninitiated reader, must be ample and comprehensive, and would demand space very far exceeding that to which I have here confined myself. The present volume embraces only a portion of those subjects that should find a place in a course of elementary reading in Mental Philosophy. I still keep in view what would give completeness to the plan that has been so long projected"--Preface. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)

Essay on the application of abstract reasoning to the Christian doctrines by Isaac Taylor( )

"In the following Essay this author has fully sustained the character which he acquired by the work named above, of being a liberal contributor to the common-stock of thought. The subject is surely one of great practical moment, bearing directly on the method of explaining and discussing the Christian doctrines; and, of course, on the labors of the preacher and the student of theology. It is quite safe to say that half of all the theological disputation which has prevailed since the Christian era, agitating the minds of men and distracting the Church, has had its origin in attempts to make revealed truth harmonize with systems of intellectual philosophy. It may fairly be doubted whether, on the whole, these attempts have at all advanced the cause of genuine orthodoxy and godliness. It is almost certain, that, if the same power of thought, and the same learning had been applied with equal zeal to a simple, apostolical exhibition of the great truths and motives of revelation, and to the inculcation of the spirit of the gospel, the result would have been far more auspicious to the cause of truth and human salvation"--Publicity materials. Physical theory of another life by Isaac Taylor( )

13 editions published in 1836 in English and Undetermined and held by 214 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The philosopher and literary author Isaac Taylor (1787-1865) published this book anonymously in 1836. The work is a development of two earlier works: Saturday Evening (1832) and Natural History of Enthusiasm (1829), all three attempts to provide a philosophy to deal with the major problems and spiritual questions of the day. The popularity of Physical Theory led to Taylor relinquishing his previous anonymity. The work is a religious and philosophically speculative exploration of the possible paths of knowledge to information regarding the future existence of human beings. Taylor believed that knowledge of the human physical constitution could be used to conjecture information about the modes of human eternal life and eternity's scheme of moral duties. The work was very popular among contemporaries and offers today an important insight into Victorian intellectual life. It is a rich source for historians of nineteenth-century religious philosophy
