Preparing classroom teachers for delivering health instruction by Liane Summerfield( )

4 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 221 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This digest examines the preparation of classroom teachers in health, noting what teachers should know to effectively provide school health education. Most states and school districts require some health education. Health is generally taught by regular classroom teachers in elementary school, by classroom teachers with some health certification in middle school, and by teachers with health credentials in high school. Few states require coursework in health for prospective elementary teachers, while one half of the states require it for middle school teachers. Lack of teacher preparation is a major obstacle to implementing high quality school health education. Several factors hinder teacher preparation in health, including lack of time in the preservice curriculum and emphasis on standardized testing. Standards for teacher preparation in health education include: provide elementary teachers with strategies for infusing health instruction into the curriculum and for laying the groundwork for intensive middle school health education, and include content and process courses in health education within all teacher preparation programs. Competencies in health education recommended for elementary, middle, and special education teachers include the ability to incorporate health concepts into other curricular areas and to select and use valid and reliable sources of health information. Childhood obesity by Liane Summerfield( Book )

2 editions published in 1990 in English and held by 78 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this discussion of childhood obesity, the medical and psychological problems associated with the condition are noted. Childhood obesity most likely results from an interaction of nutritional, psychological, familial, and physiological factors. Three factors--the family, low-energy expenditure, and heredity--are briefly examined. Early intervention is recommended with a focus on physical activity, diet management, and behavior modification. Parent education is also recommended as a means for preventing obesity in children. References are listed. (JD)
Drug and alcohol prevention education by Liane Summerfield( Book )

2 editions published in 1991 in English and held by 78 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This digest discusses the issue of safe, disciplined, drug-free schools, one of the six national goals for American education established as a result of the February 1990 education summit. The importance of including substance use in comprehensive school health education (as well as other content areas of the curriculum) is stressed, noting that school systems, administrators, parents, and the community must establish policies and strategies for achieving objectives at the local level. Program philosophy must evolve from the community in order to lessen community resistance to sensitive issues and to increase curriculum relevance. Very little evaluation has been done on drug education programs, but the information available indicates that instruction must begin early in life, be part of a comprehensive health curriculum, ensure community involvement, and include teacher training. Implementation of drug education programs involves three steps: needs assessment; curriculum development; and program evaluation. Inservice teacher education is crucial to successful drug and alcohol education. (SM)
Promoting physical activity and exercise among children by Liane Summerfield( Book )

2 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 76 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This Digest discusses the importance of and ways to foster activity and exercise in children. Following an introduction, the Digest is organized into four sections. The first section deals with the significant health benefits of physical activity, including: reduction in chronic disease risk; lowered risk of colon cancer; increase in bone density; reduction of anxiety, improvement in body image and mood; development of physical fitness; and promotion of weight control. Section two discusses childhood obesity. The third section assesses how much physical activity is enough and suggests that among young people such activity can be promoted by daily planned and structured physical education. The final section describes ways to promote physical activity among young people. It is reported that over the years, state requirements for daily physical education have eroded, and today no states currently have such a requirement. In addition to physical education, schools can promote physical activity in a variety of ways. For example, they can: promote collaboration between physical education and classroom teachers; provide extracurricular physical activity programs; coordinate physical activities with community agencies; encourage and enable parental involvement in physical activity; and provide physical and social environments that encourage and enable physical activity. Resources are included. (Contains 12 references.) (LL)
HIV/AIDS education in teacher preparation programs by Danielle Skripak( )

3 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 76 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Experts agree that prevention through education is the best way to fight the transmission of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), which causes Acquired Immune Deficiency (AIDS). However, the capacity of teachers to provide instruction about AIDS and other related health problems with knowledge and comfort may be limited by a lack of preservice education. This Digest highlights: (1) the extent of preservice HIV/AIDS education; (2) the need for comprehensive preservice HIV/AIDS education; (3) current efforts to include HIV/AIDS prevention education in preservice teacher education; and (4) HIV/AIDS resources for preservice teachers and teacher educators. The first section cites several studies that suggest a lack of HIV-specific training in preservice teacher education. Section two lists six factors related to HIV/AIDS that make preservice preparation critical. The third section provides examples of current efforts to incorporate HIV/AIDS prevention education into preservice teacher education programs. In addition to the resources for preservice teachers and teacher educators cited in the fourth section, information is provided on projects sponsored by the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control that are being conducted by the American Association for Health Education and the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education.
