The objective of the program was to provide basic information necessary for an overall improvement of chemical agent dissemination techniques. Studies were made of explosive generations of aerosols (mechanics of explosive processes; detonation, shock, and reaction processes; ignition processes; comminution processes); thermal and pyrotechnic generation of aerosols (thermal and pyrotechnic processes; pyrolytic and oxidative degradation processes; condensation processes); ultrasonic, pneumatic, and atomization processes; electrostatic phenomena associated with aerosol production; the application of microencapsulation to aerosol generation and enhancement; and natural aerosol generation. A critical summary of the program and recommendations for future work is first presented. This is followed by a discussion of accomplishments and recommendations for future research in each of the study areas listed above, with reference to program reports (22 Special Technical Reports and 13 Quarterly Progress Reports) for details

It was found that the particles were composed almost wholly of glass with varying amounts of included mineral fragments and air bubbles. The radioactivity was distributed irregularly throughout the particles

Simultaneous measurements of ionizing radiation and electron density during the 1962 nuclear tests yield a profile of the effective recombination coefficient. This can be interpreted in terms of dissociative and ion-ion recombination, electron attachment, and no detachment. Values of the dissociative and ion-ion recombination coefficients are obtained. The ionosphere from 50 to 700 km is discussed in an attempt to provide information of value and interest to radio communicators. Diurnal, seasonal, and solar cyclical variations of the ionosphere are considered as well as effects of diffusion, turbulence and winds, tidal and wave motions, chemical reactions, and magnetic disturbances. Ionization by extreme UV photons, solar X-rays, and Lyman-alpha and cosmic radiation are presented as functions of solar activity. The ionization and deionization processes (dissociation, recombination, charge transfer, and ion-atom interchange) that control ion and electron densities in the ionosphere are discussed. Detailed models of (1) the quiet ionosphere, (2) sudden ionic disturbances, (3) polar cap absorption events, and (4) ionospheric and geomagnetic storms are developed. Current theories of ionospheric processes and phenomena are evaluated and remaining problems of interpretation pointed out. (Author)
