Alice-Mary Talbot has profoundly influenced Byzantine Studies in America and Europe, focusing her scholarship upon the social context of Byzantine religious practices. As Director of Byzantine Studies at Dumbarton Oaks and as editor of Dumbarton Oaks Papers, she touched the professional lives of senior and junior Byzantinists alike. The history of Leo the Deacon : Byzantine military expansion in the tenth century by Leo( Book )

11 editions published between 2005 and 2017 in English and held by 217 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This is the first English translation of the History of Leo the Deacon (born circa 950), an obscure but lively author intimately familiar with the palace politics of Constantinople. The History, composed at the very end of the tenth century, focuses on the reigns of two Byzantine emperors, Nikephoros II Phokas (963-969) and John I Tzimiskes (969-976). Styling his narrative in the tradition of the classicizing historians, Leo recounts how both men ursurped the throne during the minority of the two sons of Constantine VII and used their military prowess to embark on successful campaigns against the Arabs in the south and east, and against the Rus in Bulgaria
Siegecraft : two tenth-century instructional manuals by Heron of Byzantium( Book )

8 editions published in 2000 in English and Greek, Ancient and held by 211 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The "Parangelmata Poliorcetica" and the "Geodesia," two Greek treatises on the construction of devices for siege warfare, are products of 10th-century Byzantium. The texts are presented here in critical editions based, for the first time, on the archetype manuscript "Vaticanus graecus 1605" and accompanied by an English translation and commentary."--Jacket
The life of Saint Basil the Younger : critical edition and annotated translation of the Moscow version by Gregorius( Book )

9 editions published in 2014 in English and Greek, Ancient and held by 174 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Life of Saint Basil the Younger, one of the longest and most important middle Byzantine saints' lives, presents the life of a holy man who lived in Constantinople in the first part of the tenth century. Usually described as a fictional saint, he had the distinction of residing in private homes rather than in a monastery, performing numerous miracles and using the gift of clairvoyance. The vita, purportedly written by one of Basil's disciples, a pious layman named Gregory, includes many details on daily life in Constantinople, with particular attention to slaves, servants, and eunuchs. Two lengthy descriptions of visions provide the most comprehensive source of information for Byzantine views on the afterlife. In one, the soul of an elderly servant Theodora journeys past a series of tollbooths, where demons demand an accounting of her sins in life and collect fines for her transgressions; in the other Gregory describes his vision of the celestial Jerusalem, the enthronement of the Lord at his Second Coming, and the Last Judgment."--

The Rise and Fall of Nikephoros II Phokas : five contemporary texts in annotated translations by Denis Sullivan( )

2 editions published between 2018 and 2019 in English and held by 47 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In The Rise and Fall of Nikephoros II Phokas, Denis Sullivan presents five Byzantine Greek texts that document the remarkable career of Nikephoros II Phokas, emperor from 963 until his death in 969. The first three texts are historical chronicles covering the period 944-963, which sees Nikephoras' rise from military general. The fourth is a "historical epic" poem on the successful Byzantine expedition against Arab Crete in 960-961, for which Nikephoros was the field commander. The last text is a liturgical office that declares the slain emperor a martyr and a saint. These texts, translated into English for the first time, provide information on the Phokades that is not found elsewhere in the Greek sources, and the chronicles appear to reflect now lost pro-Phokan family sources
