Fundamental studies of the chemistry of hydrogen production by Nigel Jonathan Charles Packham( Book )

1 edition published in 1990 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The production of hydrogen and its isotopes from two promising mechanisms is investigated. A treatment of the biological production of hydrogen is given, both from light activated pathways (photosynthetic biohydrogen production), and from light independent pathways (a fermentation approach). Rates of hydrogen production from the former series of investigations fell in the range previously reported by other workers in the field. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy was performed on one of the reaction intermediates, ferredoxin. Variation of adsorption properties on the electrochemical level allowed an insight into the function of such a complex protein in the biochemical situation. Robotic techniques were developed in order to assist the investigations of the fermentation production pathway. Such robotic techniques allowed for a more rapid and more accurate determination of the hydrogen production rates from over 4000 strains of rumen bacteria. Optimization of environmental conditions allowed for an improvement of ten times over the non-optimized rate. Additions of methane inhibitors further increased these optimum rates by up to an order of magnitude. A further upgrade in the size of the fermentation vessel, coupled with continuous culture techniques could allow for an economic biological hydrogen system
