"A more general work on the natural sciences than its Hawaiian title would suggest to the modern reader. Hoke Akua is an abridged translation of Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet's Youth's book on natural theology (Hartford, 1832+). It was a popular work in New England schools and had many American editions." Unlike later editions, this one was primarily for use at Lahainaluna Seminary, and the plates were printed from copper plates engraved at the school, whereas the plates in the 2nd ed. were printed from stereotype cuts from Boston. The plates are also inserted at the end of the text. "The fourth plate (numbered fig. "8" at top) has hand formations representing the 26 letters of the alphabet, a system developed by Gallaudet ..., a famous American educator, to enable the user to communicate with deaf persons ... This work was published with funds from the American Tract Society"--Forbes, David W. Hawaiian national bibliography
