The Advanced Study Institute on "Photoionization and Other Probes of Many-Electron Interactions" was held at the Centre "Les Cigales" in Carry-Ie-Rouet (France), from August 31st till September 13th 1975. The Institute was sponsored by the ScientiƯ fic Affairs Division of NATO. The "Centre National de la RecherƯ che Scientifique" (France) gave also partial support to the French participants and the National Science Foundation (U.S . A.) to the American participants. A total of 18 lecturers, and 54 students selected among more than 120 applicants, attended the Institute. Over the last few years, substantial progress has been made in the experimental study of photon- or electron interactions with atoms. In particular, the g. rowing number of facilities created to use the synchrotron radiation makes now possible the realization of new types of experiments. The accumulation of new results showed clearly it was necessary to introduce electron correlations in the theoretical models in order to explain the existence and the probability of a large number of processes, in particular multiple processes. Thus large progress has also been made in the theoreƯ tical description of the excitation of the electronic systems and their interactions. It was the purpose of this Institute to bring together theoreticians and experimentalists in order to provide an opportunity to present in details the state of the art, in experiment as well as in theory, and to favor discussions on future experimenƯ tal and theoretical studies

Soft X-rays are a powerful probe of matter. They interact selectively with electrons in atoms and molecules and can be used to study atomic physics, chemical reactions, surfaces and solids, and biological entities. Over the past 20 years, synchrotrons have emerged as powerful sources of soft X-rays for experimental use. A new, third generation of synchrotron light sources is scheduled to start operation over the next few years, beginning in 1993. These facilities are distinguished by their ultra-low emittance electron beams and by their undulators -- precisely engineered magnetic devices that cause the electrons passing through them to produce highly coherent X-rays and ultraviolet light of unprecedented spectral brightness. This volume emphasizes third-generation sources that produce light in the 10 eV--10 KeV energy range. It describes potential applications ranging from the purely scientific to the commercially viable and includes chapters on the practical aspects of designing undulators and beam line optics. Nous avons étudié les processus de photoionisation et de désexcitation non radiative dans des vapeurs d'alcalins (Na) et d'alcalino-terreux (Ca, Ba) dans l'état fondamental ou dans des états excités par laser. La spectroscopie d'électrons a permis l'analyse d'énergie des électrons émis lors de l'interaction entre le rayonnement synchrotron monochromatisé émis par l'anneau ACO et un jet d'atomes.Notre travail a porté sur:-la mesure des sections efficaces de phototonisation simple et accompagnée d'excitation en sous-couches externes et internes du calcium et du baryum dans leur état fondamental, pour des énergies de photons comprises entre 20 eV et 180 eV ;- la mesure des énergies cinétiques des électrons Auger émis lors de la désexcitation d'un trou en couche interne de Ca et Ba;- l'étude de l'autoionisation des états peuplés par les transitions résonnantes 3p→ nl dans le calcium, et 4d→ nl dans le baryum.La deuxième partie de ce travail a porté sur l'étude des processus de photoionisation directe ou résonnante dans le sodium et le baryum excités par laser. Nous avons déterminé:- les forces d'oscillateur des transitions d'excitation résonnante de parité paire 2p→ 3s dans le sodium excité dans l'état 2p⁶ 3p;- la section efficace de photoionisation en sous-couche excitée 5d du baryum ainsi que celles en sous-couches internes 5s et 5p du baryum excité dans les états 5p⁶ 6s 5d¹ ³ D ;- les différentes voies de désexcitation des transitions résonnantes 4d →nl dans le baryum
