"The Orphan Film Symposium is a biennial gathering of scholars, archivists, media artists, curators, preservationists, librarians, collectors, distributors, documentarians, students, researchers, musicians, and others devoted to saving, studying, and screening all manner of neglected moving image artifacts. Since 1999, the enterprise has grown into a year-round research and preservation of an eclectic array of rediscovered films and videos. This DVD sampler of orphan films was produced exclusively for those participating in the 7th Orphan Film Symposium [on April 7-10], 2010. The eleven titles come from the libraries of the two institutions that have hosted and organized Orphans 1 through 7, the University of South Carolina and New York University. They represent some of the many categories of images that fall under the rubric of 'orphan film': newsreels, outtakes, sponsored films, documentary fragments, silent and public domain works, educational and advocacy films, raw footage, appropriated video, and home movies."--Container

in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Collection of published and unpublished fire insurance maps by the Sanborn Map Company (previously known as the Sanborn Map and Publishing Company and Sanborn Perris Map Company), received by the South Caroliniana Library from the Geography and Map Division of the Library of Congress and a defunct local insurance company. The maps cover over 300 cities and towns in South Carolina between the 1880s and 1960s. The majority of the maps are drawn to a scale of fifty feet per inch on sheets of 21 by 25 inch paper. For each city and town, building location and material composition by color coding is detailed. Many buildings, especially in downtown urban areas, are labeled by name. Particular attention is paid to fire departments, water and gas mains, and distances from fire hydrants or fountains to edifices. Today, these maps are utilized extensively by architectural historians, environmentalists, genealogists, historians, historic preservationists, and urban historical geographers. Site also includes links to the survey of South Carolina historic properties and union list of Sanborn and other fire insurance maps
