Unconscious places by Thomas Struth( Book )

7 editions published in 2012 in English and German and held by 198 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Mundane buildings, nondescript streets, anonymous facades--these are the features that first strike in viewing Thomas Struth's pictures of streets--"unconscious places". Both in black-and-white and in color, Struth uses a frontal, eye-height view, with no optical distortion to disrupt the impression that what we see is a neutral, objective recording of reality. At the same time, Struth's urban landscapes are also a critical depiction of different human habitats. This volume presents a comprehensive survey of Struth's street views from the 1970s to 2010: narrow lanes in Edinburgh, Wuhan, Naples, and Erfurt; satellite towns in Paris, Leverkusen, Chicago, and Pyongyang; thoroughfares in Brussels, Lima, and Los Angeles; grand boulevards in St. Petersburg, New York City, and Beijing. Frequently there is an almost total absence of people in his cityscapes, which provides a feeling of desolation. In contrast, his famous Shibuya Crossing, Tokyo, is bustling with people and billboards
Thomas Struth by Thomas Struth( Book )

5 editions published in 2017 in English and German and held by 198 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Since the 1990s, Thomas Struth has been one of the most renowned and influential photographers of the German art scene. A brilliant conceptualist with an unerring eye for color, Struth studied painting under Gerhard Richter and photography under Bernd and Hilla Becher, a combination that decisively influenced his vision. This volume collects more than 120 representative photographs from each series in Struth's oeuvre, including: early street photographs from the 1970s and '80s ('Unconscious Places'); the "Family Portraits" series; the "Museum Photographs"; "Nature and Politics"; the jungle photographs ("New Pictures from Paradise"); and, from his latest series, images from the realm of science. Also included are previously unpublished works from the photographer's archive. The largest and most comprehensive survey of the artist's work to date, this superbly illustrated volume includes scholarly essays by curators Thomas Weski and Ulrich Wilmes, as well as photographer Jana-Maria Hartmann. An interview with the artist by Okwui Enwezor, Director of Haus der Kunst, provides valuable insight into Struth's career and ideas."
Urban visions : experiencing and envisioning the city by Steven Spier( Book )

1 edition published in 2002 in English and held by 193 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The modern city that was initiated by the great, violent forces unleashed by the industrialisation of Europe in the late eighteenth century is the city we still inhabit today: not so much in its physical form, but in the condition and sometimes affliction of being urban. The question of what kind of city we are trying to have is an urgent one as the world continues its dramatic urbanisation. Urban Visions presumes that an understanding of our urban experience is a prerequisite for envisioning what the city could be. The contemporary city is a place of contested ownership and authorship. This book accepts that visions, which are currently more articulate in disciplines and media other than architecture and planning, need not always be utopian, heroic or grand. But our experience of the city does occur in something material that is designed - be it by architects, planners, or more often and anonymously larger societal or cultural forces. It is an intricate construction in which physical, cultural, commerical, historical, ideological and personal presences can coincide. The city must embrace, and its representations must reflect, the wealth or possible experiences of it. In assembling work by distinguished authors from different disciplines and countries, Urban Visions offers a patient examination of what urban experience is and of the city's necessity, with explicit and implicit propositions about what it could be. -- From cover flap
Stephen Shore : selected works 1973-1981 by Stephen Shore( Book )

2 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 168 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

" ... an international group of artists, curators, authors, and cultural figures have selected up to ten photographs apiece from Stephen Shore's Uncoming Places archive. None of the images appear in the current edition of his landmark book of the same name; most are published here for the first time. Each suite of photographs, chosen from over four hundred newly scanned or rediscovered negatives, offers an idiosyncratic commentary on Shore's distinctive vision of America and proposes new perspectives on this seminal body of work from the 1970s and early '80s"--Page 5

Janice Guy by Janice Guy( Book )

3 editions published in 2018 in English and Undetermined and held by 41 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is the first monograph on British-born photographer Janice Guy (born 1953), gathering her radical experiments in photography from the late 1970s. Made while she was a student at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, this selection of photographs sheds light on Guy's work as an artist before she gained international renown as a gallerist of contemporary art. The German photographer Thomas Struth, a fellow student in Germany at the time, has written a moving essay for this book about their formative years and ongoing friendship. The book also includes an introduction by American photographer Justine Kurland, which makes a compelling case for the reconsideration of these photographs today. The work presented in Janice Guy, much of which appears here for the first time, reverberates as never before amid the current proclivity for producing and circulating images of ourselves
