The Mackenzie by Leslie Roberts( Book )

3 editions published between 1949 and 1974 in English and held by 577 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book has been almost fifteen years in the making. When its author first saw the Mackenzie, in the early days of flight into its vast empire, he had no idea that he was beginning a book about one of the great Rivers of America. Shortly after V-J day a third journey was made to the Mackenzie, in order to revisit the mines at Great Bear Lake where the makings of U-235 and The Bomb had been extracted from the frozen ground. It was on this visit, while flying over the great river, heading south from Canol and the oil wells at Norman, that the idea of this book took root. - from Foreword

In the village of Viger by Duncan C Scott( Book )

3 editions published in 1945 in English and held by 87 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The ten stories in In the Village of Viger portray the life of a rural village as it faces the darkness of its own future. An established milliner, Madame Laroque, is upset by the advent of a younger, more popular rival. An innkeeper's obsession with the Franco-Prussian War drives his descent into madness. A gardener longs to return to the village in France where his mother was born. At once comical, farcical, and tragic, this superb collection, first published in 1896, anticipates later collections of linked short stories including Alice Munro's Who Do You Think You Are' and Margaret Laurence's A Bird in the House
