Preserving the global environment : the challenge of shared leadership by Jessica Tuchman Mathews( Book )

16 editions published between 1990 and 1991 in English and held by 738 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In April of 1990, a three-day conference was convened at which 76 men and women from 18 countries representing a spectrum of government, business, labor, academia, the media, and the professions gathered to discuss how the United State should reorient its policies and relations toward other countries and international institutions to preserve the global environment. This document is a statement produced by the conference participants after the close of their discussions. The statement contends that three indivisibly linked global environmental trends together constitute an increasingly grave challenge to the habitability of the earth. These trends, which are discussed, are human population growth; tropical deforestations and the rapid loss of biological diversity; and global atmospheric change, including stratospheric ozone loss and greenhouse warming. The statement also outlines the goals and means of international cooperation and challenges. The United States must play a key leadership role in global environmental issues both by example and through international participation. (Db)
Managing global issues : lessons learned by P. J Simmons( )

1 edition published in 2001 in English and held by 614 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Globalization is pushing to the fore a wide variety of global problems that demand urgent policy attention. Managing Global Issues provides a comprehensive comparative assessment of international efforts to manage global problems. It identifies and explains successes and failures of such efforts, examines the roles of different actors, and outlines lessons that may guide future action by governments, international organizations, nongovernmental organizations, and the private sector. The volume's 16 case studies examine organized crime, drugs, corruption, human rights, labor rights, health, trade, financial markets, development assistance, the environment, the global commons, communications, weapons of mass destruction, conventional weapons, internal conflicts, and refugees. Managing Global Issues is the result of an international multidisciplinary research team composed of experts in specific global issue areas. The book's broad scope, numerous case studies and its rigorous comparative analytical framework offers a unique and valuable contribution to the rapidly growing literature on global governance. Aggarwal (University of California, Berkeley), Thomas Bernauer (University of ZUrich), William Drake (Carnegie Endowment), Octavio GOmez-DantEs (National Institute of Public Health, Mexico), Catherine Gwin (World Bank), Peter M. Iraq : what next? by Joseph Cirincione( Book )

5 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Provides a concise outline of the concerns over Iraq's missile, nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons capabilities that inspectors are investigating. It addresses the effectiveness of intelligence sharing, site visits, the inspectors' use of advanced technology, and Iraq's willingness to cooperate. The report argues that a realistic timeframe for inspections is another year for the discovery process, followed by dismantlement and permanent monitoring. Among its conclusions: far from being exhausted, the inspections process has just begun. Inspections should be pursued without ruling out future use of force. Iraq's lack of full cooperation is a material breach, but not a casus belli. As the report argues, disarmament achieved without a war would be an enormous, and enormously popular, achievement. However, if the aim is not, in fact, disarmament but regime change as a matter of principle, then the inspection and disarmament processes now underway are largely irrelevant
