This book explores the linguistic expression of identity, intended as the social positioning of self and others, by focusing mostly on a scenario of prolonged language contact, namely the ancient Mediterranean area. The volume includes studies on language contact and on identity strategies developed at different levels of analysis, from phonetics to pragmatics, in, among others, Latin, Greek, Coptic, Syriac, (Cypriot) Arabic, Medieval Sardinian
Synchrony and diachrony : a dynamic interface( )

17 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 1,131 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In Extreme Southern dialects of Italy, complement clauses can appear in three different ways: (1) with the infinitive; (2) with modo + ind. (in Salentino quod + ind.); (3) with ca/chi + ind. Dependent finite clauses headed by modo/quod replace the infinitive particularly when the matrix predicate is a verb expressing will, wish, aim or intention. This replacement, which represents a syntactic calque from Italo-Greek varieties, finished to involve also the verb potere 'can', in a different way from Italo-Greek, where it is is the only verbal form which never appears in this
Positioning the self and others : linguistic perspectives by Chiara Ghezzi( )

8 editions published in 2018 in English and Undetermined and held by 968 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Though positioning has been addressed in social psychology and in identity construction, less attention has been paid to the specific linguistic markers which are drawn upon in discourse to position the self and other(s). This volume focusses on address terms, pragmatic markers, code switching/choice and orthography, the indexicalities of which are explored in different communicative activities. The volume is unusual in: i) the range of languages which are covered: Bergamasco, Brazilian Portuguese, English, Finnish, French, Georgian, Greek, Italian, Latin, Russian, Spanish and Swedish; ii) the inclusion of different communicative settings and text-types: workplace emails, everyday and institutional conversations, interviews, migrant narratives, radio phone-ins, dyadic and group settings, road-signs, service encounters; iii) its consideration of both synchronic and diachronic factors; iv) its mix of theoretical and methodological approaches. The volume illustrates some of the linguistic means speakers draw on to position themselves and others and hopes to stimulate further research studies in this vein."--
Discourse and pragmatic markers from Latin to the Romance languages( )

10 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 218 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book examines the historical development of discourse and pragmatic markers across the Romance languages. These markers serve to indicate the organization of the discourse, the speaker's relationship with the interlocutor, and the speaker's stance with regard to the information expressed. Their relevance is in assisting interpretation, despite the fact that they have little or no propositional content. In this book, distinguished scholars from different theoretical backgrounds analyse the different classes of discourse and pragmatic markers found in Latin and the Romance languages and explore both their diachronic development and their synchronic properties. Following an introduction and overview of the development of these markers, the book is divided into two parts: the first part investigates pragmatic markers developed from verbs, such as Latin quaeso, Romanian ma rog, and Spanish o sea; the second looks at adverbs as discourse markers, such as French deja and Italian gia, Romanian atunci and Portuguese alias. Chapters address a variety of theoretical issues such as the cyclic nature of functional developments, the nature of grammaticalization and pragmaticalization, semantic change, and the emergence of new pragmatic values. The arguments presented also have consequences for any analysis of the interfaces between grammar, discourse, and interaction.--Amazon.com
