1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

"The 2016 Shaw Prize for Life Science and Medicine is shared by Professor Adrian Bird of Edinburgh University, and Professor Huda Zoghbi of Baylor College of Medicine. Professor Bird discovered the attachment of a methyl group to the C residue in DNA mark some genes to be turned off whereas the absence of that methyl group allows genes to be turned on. He then found chromo-binding proteins that recognise the methylC to switch off gene function, and in particular, a protein he named MECPS, that makes contact with an enzyme that removes an acetyl chemical tag from histones. Later, neurologist Huda Zoghbi discovered mutations in MeCPs are the primary cause of the neurological disorder, Rett Syndrome. Then Bird established the priinciple of reversibility of Rett symptoms in mice, and thus possibly humans, leading to much research to find a cure for the disorder."--TVB Website
