Object design in the Age of Enlightenment : the history of the Royal Free Drawing School in Paris by Ulrich Leben( Book )

16 editions published in 2004 in English and French and held by 304 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Royal Free Drawing School (Ecole royale gratuite de dessin) fulfilled the Enlightenment ideal of an education open to all, rich and poor, male and female, and an education founded not on apprenticeship and the teachings of one master, but open to ideas of all sorts and the practical application of universal principles." "The surviving documents, engravings, drawings, and objects that can be traced to the School, as well as the impressive number of artisans who trained there - craftsmen such as Claude Odiot, sculptors such as Sebastien Cave, architects such as Charles Percier, and painters such as Girodet - and the important figures in eighteenth-century cultural life - such as Voltaire, Lavoisier, the duc de Choiseul, and Madame du' Barry - who were involved with the School attest to its enormous importance in the development of the decorative arts in France during the Ancien Regime and in the century that followed."--Jacket
Salvaging the past : Georges Hoentschel and French decorative arts from the Metropolitan Museum of Art( Book )

9 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 237 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book explores the life, professional activities, artistic production and collecting practices of Georges Hoentschel through the objects he collected and created. Essays by the editors, joined by Amy F. Ogata, associate professor at Bard Graduate Center and Christine E. Brennan, senior research associate in Medieval Art as the Metropolitan Museum, address his biography, business contacts, and clients, as well as the arrival of the collection in New York, its lavish four-volume illustrated catalogue, and the medieval collections. Also discussed is Hoentschel's involvement with contemporary art, including his intriguing stoneware creations and designs for a pavilion and interiors at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris. Fully illustrated catalogue entries explore the astonishing range of objects he collected. Throughout the book, new documentary material from archives and newspapers illuminates this little-explored chapter in the history of collecting decorative arts between France and America at the dawn of the twentieth century."--Jacket

Empire style : the Hôtel de Beauharnais in Paris : the German ambassador's residence in Paris by Jörg Ebeling( Book )

3 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 59 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This monograph dedicated to the most spectacular example of Parisian First Empire interior architecture retraces the history of the building and the lives of its residents. The Hôtel de Beauharnais, constructed in 1713, gained renown during the Consulate period. In 1803, Josephine Bonaparte acquired the property for her son, Eugene de Beauharnais, and had the building renovated and decorated at great expense. At the fall of the Napoleonic Empire, it was sold to the King of Prussia and became an embassy during the nineteenth century. With its unique Consulate and Empire decor, the palace is an invaluable specimen of Parisian interior architecture. The result of more than ten years of research and restoration work, this book recounts three centuries of European political history through the lives of the Hôtel's successive owners

Ein Meisterwerk des Empire das Palais Beauharnais in Paris - Residenz des deutschen Botschafters( Book )

3 editions published in 2016 in German and held by 26 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
