2 editions published between 1992 and 2000 in German and held by 16 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Reminiscences of the author's childhood among nine brothers and sisters in the family of Chief Rabbi Joseph Zvi Carlebach (1883-1942) of Hamburg and his wife Lotte (1900-1942), shadowed by the experience of Nazi persecution. The parents sent the older children abroad, but remained behind with the younger ones. Pp. 215-369 contain family letters from the period 1938-41, describing the increasingly difficult situation of the Jews in Germany. The Carlebachs (with the four youngest children) were deported in December 1941 with a large transport of Jews from Hamburg to the Jungfernhof camp near Riga, where they were killed in a mass shooting on 26 March 1942. Only one of the deported sons was selected for forced labor and survived. Pp. 370-375 contain eyewitness testimony on the deportation and the camp
