Memoirs of Alex (family name not given), now living in Boston, as related to the Polish writer Joanna Wiszniewicz in conversations between 1992-95. The book is written in the first person. Alex was born in 1927 in Warsaw to an assimilated Jewish family. Discusses his childhood, including problems of assimilated Jews in Polish society and antisemitism. His father died before the war. His mother worked as an administrator in a Jewish hospital. Describes their life in Warsaw after the Nazi occupation and, later, life in the ghetto. He and his mother survived the "actions" of 1942. After the ghetto uprising in 1943 his mother was killed; Alex was deported to Majdanek and later to the labor camp in Budzyń. In 1944 he was sent to a labor camp in Radom, from there he was transferred to Auschwitz, and from there to a camp near Stuttgart. After the war he was interned in a DP camp in Germany and then emigrated to the USA. Throughout the book there are meditations on his intellectual formation in wartime conditions, on books he read in the ghetto, and on the behavior of Poles and Jews
