Phenomenology and mysticism : the verticality of religious experience by Anthony J Steinbock( Book )

15 editions published between 2007 and 2010 in English and held by 403 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Exploring the first-person narratives of three figures from the Christian, Jewish, and Islamic mystical traditions - St. Teresa of Avila, Rabbi Dov Baer, and Ruzbihan Baqli - Anthony J. Steinbock provides a full phenomenology of mysticism based in the Abrahamic religious traditions. Steinbock relates a broad range of religious experiences, or verticality, to the many philosophical problems of evidence, selfhood, and otherness. From this philosophical description of vertical experience, Steinbock develops a social and cultural critique in terms of idolatry - as pride, secularism, and fundamentalism - and suggests that contemporary understandings of human experience must come from a fuller, more open view of religious experience. This careful study will interest all readers of philosophy and religion."--Jacket

Surprise : an emotion? by Natalie Depraz( )

8 editions published between 2018 and 2019 in English and held by 144 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume offers perspectives on the theme of surprise crossing philosophical, phenomenological, scientific, psycho-physiology, psychiatric, and linguistic boundaries. The main question it examines is whether surprise is an emotion. It uses two main theoretical frameworks to do so: psychology, in which surprise is commonly considered a primary emotion, and philosophy, in which surprise is related to passions as opposed to reason. The book explores whether these views on surprise are satisfying or sufficient. It looks at the extent to which surprise is also a cognitive phenomenon and primitively embedded in language, and the way in which surprise is connected to personhood, the interpersonal, and moral emotions. Many philosophers of different traditions, a number of experimental studies conducted over the last decades, recent works in linguistics, and ancestral wisdom testimonies refer to surprise as a crucial experience of both rupture and openness in bodily and inner life. However, surprise is a theme that has not been dealt with directly and systematically in philosophy, in the sciences, in linguistics, or in spiritual traditions. This volume accomplishes just that
Limit-phenomena and phenomenology in Husserl by Anthony J Steinbock( Book )

8 editions published in 2017 in English and Spanish and held by 101 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Recent discussions around limit-problems, namely the questions concerning what can appear in phenomenological reflection as well as what phenomenology as philosophical reflection can handle, call for a concerted treatment of the problem of limit-phenomena. In this important new book, Anthony J. Steinbock, a leading voice in contemporary phenomenology, explores that question in the context of an interrelated series of problems in Husserl's phenomenology. Representing a continued struggle with these insights and problems, the first section sketches out the problem of limit-phenomena, and addresses generally that rich estuary of liminal experience that commanded Husserl's attention in his research manuscripts. Steinbock goes on to offer a correlative reflection on the issue of method, and he explores a specific set of what have been recently called "limit-problems" within phenomenology, relating to the problem of individuation and, on a more personal level, vocation. This rich and timely book offers an excellent demonstration of phenomenology in practice. Book jacket
Phenomenology in Japan by Anthony J Steinbock( )

9 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 95 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Since the introduction of phenomenology to Japan in the 1910's, Japan has steadily become a major international site for both original and scholarly phenomenological work. Phenomenology in Japan presents several of Japan's leading phenomenologists, studied in both the Buddhist and Western thought, who bring to bear their unique backgrounds on our rich fields of experience. These contributions converge in novel ways on the problem of `dualist', and draw on resources within the phenomenological tradition to respond to its challenges
It's not about the gift : from givenness to loving by Anthony J Steinbock( Book )

3 editions published in 2018 in English and held by 67 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In his fascinating new book, leading phenomenologist Anthony Steinbock intervenes in contemporary debate around the idea of the gift through a set of critical readings in which he situates the gift in the context of interpersonal relations. While taking up the key figures in the discussion (Heidegger, Derrida, Marion, Henry, Maimonides), Steinbock proposes the following: that these discussions of the gift are really not about the gift. He demonstrates, through critical interpretations and phenomenological analyses, how the gift only becomes meaningful in the context of interpersonal loving. The gift is not the point: "it's not about the gift". The gift becomes most fully what it is, following Maimonides, in participating with others toward their liberation. The point is the interpersonal relation of lover to beloved, which allows the gift to appear" -- From the publisher
Analyses concerning passive and active synthesis : lectures on transcendental logic by Edmund Husserl( Book )

3 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Drawing upon everyday events and personal experiences, the Analyses are marked by a patient attention to the subtle emergence of sense in our lives. By advancing a phenomenology of association that treats such phenomena as bodily kinaesthesis, temporal genesis, habit, affection, attention, motivation, and the unconscious, Husserl explores the cognitive dimensions of the body in its affectively significant surroundings. An elaboration of these diverse modes of evidence and their modalizations (transcendental aesthetic), allows Husserl to trace the origin of truth up to judicative achievement (transcendental logic)." "Joined by several of Husserl's essays on static and genetic method, the Analyses afford a richness of description unequalled by the majority of Husserl's works available to English readers. Students of phenomenology and of Husserl's thought will find this an indispensable work."--Jacket
