Islamism in Morocco : religion, authoritarianism, and electoral politics by Malika Zeghal( Book )

23 editions published between 2005 and 2010 in French and English and held by 283 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Malika Zeghal analyzes the historical roots and recent evolution of Moroccan Islamist movements in the context of a new political system that combines pluralistic electoral competition with authoritarian government. To elucidate these ideological and institutional transformations, she stresses the role of 'ulama and Islamic institutions and the history of their tense and unequal relationship with an authoritarian monarchy constrained by the religious origins of its legitimacy. She analyzes the transformations in the movements' political strategies and religious discourses generated by the legalized Islamist party's integration into the political process. This book provides an original perspective on the prospects for democratization in an Arab country and the role religion plays in that process. In a clear and compelling presentation that encompasses reactions to the 2003 suicide attacks in Casablanca and the legislative election of 2007, the author combines historical analysis with her perspective, as a political scientist, on the rapidly changing dynamics of Islam and politics in Morocco

Entre politique et religion, itinéraires contemporains des Ulamas d'Al Azhar : mil neuf cent cinquante deux-mil neuf cent quatre vingt treize by Malika Zeghal( Book )

3 editions published between 1994 and 1995 in French and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The analysis of the body of the Egyptian ulamas educated at al Azhar, has represented these men of religion as traditional actors. This body has been isolated from modern education, and tinely controlled by the political power, especially during the nasserian regime, in the seventies, the ulamas offer a different image of men of religion : their reaction to social change has an ideological aspect, and their submission to the power is no longer entirely true. Through the analysis of otal biographies, we show that the ulamas represent their functions in a way that put them out of the reach of the political center. The emerging political islamism during the seventies has actually led the ulamas to impose their presence in the Egyptian society as modern actors

La démocratie est-elle soluble dans l'islam? by Madawi Al-Rasheed( )

1 edition published in 2016 in French and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Identification of soil dynamic properties through an optimization analysis( )

1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Abstract: An identification technique is used to estimate the nonlinear dynamic properties of a soil deposit using the acceleration records provided by a vertical (downhole) array along with a nonlinear least squares optimization algorithm. The technique employs non-parametric estimates of the shear stresses derived from the recorded accelerations; therefore, it does not require the forward modeling of the whole soil deposit. Soil properties are described by a hyperbolic shear stress-strain relation. A multi-surface plasticity approach is used to model the stress-strain relation. Convergence and accuracy of the identification technique are assessed using numerical simulations. Two centrifuge experiments are used to validate and demonstrate the capabilities of the technique to estimate the stiffness and damping ratio profiles of a site subjected to base excitation. Performance of the technique is also evaluated using field data corresponding to the 1987 Superstition Hills earthquake recordings from the Wildlife Liquefaction Array at the Imperial Valley in Southern California. The identification results were found to be in good agreement with direct measurements of shear wave velocities
