Industries and the bank lending effects of bank credit demand and monetary policy in Germany by Ivo J. M Arnold( Book )

4 editions published in 2006 in English and German and held by 39 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This paper presents evidence on the industry effects of bank lending in Germany and identifies the industry effects of bank lending associated with changes in monetary policy and industryspecific bank credit demand. To this end, we estimate individual bank lending functions for 13 manufacturing and non-manufacturing industries and five banking groups using quarterly bank balance sheet and bank lending data for the period 1992:1-2002:4. The evidence from dynamic panel data models shows that industry-specific bank lending growth predominantly responds to changes in industry-specific bank credit demand rather than to changes in monetary policy. In fact, conclusions regarding the bank lending effects of monetary policy are very sensitive to the choice of industry. The empirical results lend strong support to the existence of industry effects of bank lending. Because industries are a prominent source of variation in the bank lending effects of bank credit demand and monetary policy, the paper concludes that the industry composition of bank credit portfolios is an important determinant of bank lending growth and monetary policy effectiveness

We motivate the formulation of market equilibria as a mixed complementarity problem (MCP) in order to bridge the gap between bottom-up energy system models and top-down general equilibrium models for energy policy analysis. Our objective is primarily pedagogic. We first lay out that the MCP approach provides an explicit representation of weak inequalities and complementarity between decision variables and market equilibrium conditions. This permits us to combine bottom-up technological details and top-down economic richness in a single mathematical format. We then provide a stylized example of how to integrate bottom-up features into a top-down modeling framework along with worked examples and computer programs which illustrate our approach

Sovereign risk and simple debt dynamics in Asia by Clemens Kool( Book )

3 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this paper we develop a simple neoclassical growth model with perfect international capital mobility to analyze the international debt dynamics of developing countries in general and Korea, Malaysia and Thailand in particular. We show that three different regimes can be distinguished: a stable steady state debtor regime, a stable steady state creditor regime and an unstable regime. A switch from a stable debtor or a stable creditor position to an unstable creditor regime may be a sign of forthcoming trouble. We investigate this issue empirically for the three Asian countries in the run-up to the 1997 Asia crisis, using data over the period 1975-2000. Over the full sample, the evidence suggests that debt dynamics evolved according to the stable debtor case in each country. Using a rolling regression technique, we find that indeed occasional switches to the unstable regime occurred. More in particular, we demonstrate that all three countries investigated here were facing deteriorating domestic fundamentals reflected in potentially unstable debt dynamics prior to the breakout of the Asia crisis. As such, our approach appears to offer an interesting early warning indicator for financial (debt) crises
