Jerusalem, 1000-1400 : every people under heaven by N.Y.) Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York( Book )

11 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 463 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Medieval Jerusalem was a vibrant international center and home to multiple cultures, faiths, and languages. Harmonious and dissonant influences from Persian, Turkish, Greek, Syrian, Armenian, Georgian, Coptic, Ethiopian, Indian, and European traditions gave Jerusalem a key role in shaping art produced for both secular and religious purposes. Patrons and artists from Christian, Jewish, and Islamic traditions alike focused their attention on the Holy City, endowing and enriching its sacred buildings and creating luxury goods for its residents. This artistic fertility was particularly in evidence between the 11th and 14th centuries, notwithstanding often devastating circumstances--from the earthquake of 1033 to the fierce battles of the Crusades. So strong a magnet was Jerusalem that it drew out the creative imagination of even those separated from it by great distance. Through compelling essays and focused discussions of more than 200 works of art, Jerusalem, 1000-1400 breaks new ground in exploring the relationship between the historical and the archetypal city of Jerusalem and uncovers the way in which the aesthetic achievements it inspired enhanced and enlivened the medieval world."--Publisher's description
Jewelry : the body transformed by N.Y.) Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York( Book )

6 editions published in 2018 in English and held by 305 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As an art form, jewelry is defined primarily through its connection to and interaction with the body--extending it, amplifying it, accentuating it, distorting it, concealing it, or transforming it. But how is the meaning of jewelry bound to the body that wears it? Establishing six different modes of ornamenting the body--Deconstructed, Divine, Regal, Idealized, Alluring, and Resplendent--this artfully designed book illustrates how these various definitions of the body give meaning to the jewelry that adorns it. More than 200 examples of exceptional jewelry and ornaments, created across the globe from antiquity to the present, are shown alongside paintings and sculptures of bejeweled bodies to demonstrate the social, political, and aesthetic role of jewelry. From earflares of warrior heroes in Pre-Columbian Peru to designs by Yves Saint-Laurent, these precious and most intimate works of art provide insight not only about the wearer but also into the designers, artisans, and cultures that produced them. The exhibition "Jan van Eyck. Grisaille" presents an overview of selected works in grisaille, a technique which experienced its heyday in the 14th and 15th centuries and was highly popular in the Netherlands. Among the great master who practised the art of grisailles was Jan van Eyck. His famous "Annuciation Diptych" owned by the Thyssen Bornemisza Museum constitutes the focal point of this exhibition. This exhibition aims to underscore the popularity and importance that the grisaille phenomenon acquired in the 14th and 15th centuries. For this reason the project offers an overview of carefully selected pieces excecuted in black and white and using very different techniques and media. Bijoux : le corps sublimé( Book )

2 editions published in 2018 in French and held by 27 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The year one : art of the ancient world east and west by N.Y.) Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York( )

2 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Two thousand years ago, artworks of astonishing variety were being created in far-flung regions of the world. This volume presents more than 150 works of art from western Europe, the Mediterranean, the Near East, India, China, Southeast Asia, and the Americas, and highlights the similarities that existed between the widely separated parts of the world in which they originated. Historical summaries accompanied by maps briefly describe the nature of each culture and the flow of power and peoples during the period centering around the Year One. An introductory essay offers both an overview and an account of the startling degree to which the ancient world was an interconnected one, crisscrossed by intrepid traders and adventurers who journeyed both east and west to bring back coveted goods and tantalizing scraps of information about exotic lands. The works of art included here are almost all in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art; the book's authors are members of the Museum's curatorial staff representing seven different departments. -- Metropolitan Museum of Art website
