Modeling in Event-B : system and software engineering by Jean-Raymond Abrial( )

13 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 897 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A practical text suitable for an introductory or advanced course in formal methods, this book presents a mathematical approach to modeling and designing systems using an extension of the B formalism: Event-B. Based on the idea of refinement, the author's systematic approach allows the user to construct models gradually and to facilitate a systematic reasoning method by means of proofs. Readers will learn how to build models of programs and, more generally, discrete systems, but this is all done with practice in mind. The numerous examples provided arise from various sources of computer system developments, including sequential programs, concurrent programs, and electronic circuits. The book also contains a large number of exercises and projects ranging in difficulty. Each of the examples included in the book has been proved using the Rodin Platform tool set, which is available free for download at www.event-b.org"--Provided by publisher
Rigorous methods for software construction and analysis : essays dedicated to Egon Börger on the occasion of his 60th birthday by Jean-Raymond Abrial( )

21 editions published between 2009 and 2010 in English and held by 523 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This Festschrift volume, published in honor of Egon Börger, contains 14 papers from a Dagstuhl Seminar, which was organized as a "Festkolloquium" on the occasion of his 60th birthday in May 2006. Focusing on applied formal methods, the volume covers a wide range of applied research, spanning from theoretical and methodological foundations to practical applications of Abstract State Machines, B, and beyond, emphasizing universal methods and tools that, regardless of their applicational orientation, are still committed to the ideal of mathematical rigor. In particular, the papers address the following central topics: methodological foundations of requirements specification and verification, characterization of specification languages and their logical foundations, advanced tool environments and systematic integration of tools, machine assisted validation and verification, distributed algorithms and concurrent protocols, novel applications in public safety, security and privacy, industrial case studies and experience reports, and the role of formal methods in computer science education
Formal methods for industrial applications : specifying and programming the steam boiler control( Book )

23 editions published in 1996 in English and Undetermined and held by 507 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book, with the CD-ROM included, is the documentation of a unique collaborative effort in evaluating formal methods for usage under industrial constraints: the major techniques for formally supported specification, design, and verification of large programs and complex systems are applied to a non-trivial and non-academic problem which is typical for industrial informal requirements specifications. The 21 papers included in the book, together with an introduction and competition report, were selected from 33 candidate solutions. This book comes with a CD-ROM containing, besides the printed papers, executable code, full definitions of all parts of the specifications, and detailed descriptions of foundational matters where appropriate
The B-book : assigning programs to meanings by Jean-Raymond Abrial( Book )

21 editions published between 1996 and 2005 in English and Chinese and held by 377 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The next part introduces the two basic programming features of sequencing and loop, with examples showing how to construct small algorithms. The last part covers the very important notion of refinement. It shows how to construct large software systems by means of layered architectures of modules. It culminates in the presentation of several examples of complete development with a special emphasis on the methodological approach. Finally, appendices give summaries of all the logical and mathematical definitions and of all the rules and proof obligations. With the appearance of the B-Book, formal methods practitioners, computer scientists, and systems developers at last will have access to what is both the definitive account of the B method, and one of the standard references on the formal approach to the construction of software systems
