Manifold mirrors : the crossing paths of the arts and mathematics by
Felipe Cucker(
)
19 editions published in 2013 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,392 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Most works of art, whether illustrative, musical or literary, are created subject to a set of constraints. In many (but not all) cases, these constraints have a mathematical nature, for example, the geometric transformations governing the canons of J.S. Bach, the various projection systems used in classical painting, the catalog of symmetries found in Islamic art, or the rules concerning poetic structure. This fascinating book describes geometric frameworks underlying this constraintbased creation. The author provides a development in geometry, a description of how these frameworks fit the creative process within several art practices, and discusses the perceptual effects derived from the presence of particular geometric characteristics

15 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 1,016 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This invaluable book contains 19 papers selected from those submitted to a conference held in Hong Kong in July 2000 to celebrate the 70th birthday of Professor Steve Smale. It may be regarded as a continuation of the proceedings of SMALEFEST 1990 ("From Topology to Computation") held in Berkeley, USA, 10 years before, but with the focus on the area in which Smale worked more intensively during the '90's, namely the foundations of computational mathematics

"This volume is a collection of articles based on the plenary talks presented at the 2008 meeting in Hong Kong of the Society for the Foundations of Computational Mathematics. The talks were given by some of the foremost world authorities in computational mathematics. The topics covered reflect the breadth of research within the area as well as the richness and fertility of interactions between seemingly unrelated branches of pure and applied mathematics. As a result this volume will be of interest to researchers in the field of computational mathematics and also to nonexperts who wish to gain some insight into the state of the art in this active and significant field."BOOK JACKET

Condition : the geometry of numerical algorithms by
Peter Bürgisser(
)
15 editions published in 2013 in English and German and held by 582 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book gathers threads that have evolved across different mathematical disciplines into seamless narrative. It deals with condition as a main aspect in the understanding of the performance regarding both stability and complexity of numerical algorithms. While the role of condition was shaped in the last halfcentury, so far there has not been a monograph treating this subject in a uniform and systematic way. The book puts special emphasis on the probabilistic analysis of numerical algorithms via the analysis of the corresponding condition. The exposition's level increases along the book, starting in the context of linear algebra at an undergraduate level and reaching in its third part the recent developments and partial solutions for Smale's 17th problem which can be explained within a graduate course. Its middle part contains a conditionbased course on linear programming that fills a gap between the current elementary expositions of the subject based on the simplex method and those focusing on convex programming

Learning theory : an approximation theory viewpoint by
Felipe Cucker(
Book
)
16 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 397 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The goal of learning theory is to approximate a function from sample values. To attain this goal it draws on statistics, approximation theory and algorithmics. This book aims to give a general overview of the theoretical foundations of learnign theory

Foundations of computational mathematics : selected papers of a conference held at Rio de Janeiro, January 1997 by
Felipe Cucker(
Book
)
25 editions published between 1997 and 2003 in English and German and held by 325 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book contains articles corresponding to some of the talks delivered at the Foundations of Computational Mathematics (FoCM) conference at IMPA in Rio de Janeiro in January 1997. FoCM brings together a novel constellation of subjects in which the computational process itself and the foundational mathematical underpinnings of algorithms are the objects of study. The conference was organized around nine workshops: systems of algebraic equations and computational algebraic geometry, homotopy methods and real machines, information based complexity, numerical linear algebra, approximation and PDE's, optimization, differential equations and dynamical systems, relations to computer science and vision and related computational tools. The book gives the reader an idea of the state of the art in this emerging discipline

Complexity and real computation by
Lenore Blum(
)
7 editions published between 1984 and 1998 in English and held by 92 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Computational complexity theory provides a framework for understanding the cost of solving computational problems, as measured by the requirement for resources such as time and space. The objects of study are algorithms defined within a formal model of computation. Upper bounds on the computational complexity of a problem are usually derived by constructing and analyzing specific algorithms. Meaningful lower bounds on computational complexity are harder to come by, and are not available for most problems of interest. The dominant approach in complexity theory is to consider algorithms as oper ating on finite strings of symbols from a finite alphabet. Such strings may represent various discrete objects such as integers or algebraic expressions, but cannot rep resent real or complex numbers, unless the numbers are rounded to approximate values from a discrete set. A major concern of the theory is the number of com putation steps required to solve a problem, as a function of the length of the input string
