Sex, money & personal character in eighteenth-century British politics by Marilyn Morris( )

11 editions published between 2014 and 2015 in English and held by 1,115 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

How, and why, did the Anglo-American world become so obsessed with the private lives and public character of its political leaders? Marilyn Morris finds answers in eighteenth-century Britain, when a long tradition of court intrigue and gossip spread into a much broader and more public political arena with the growth of political parties, extra-parliamentary political activities, and a partisan print culture. The public's preoccupation with the personal character of the ruling elite paralleled a growing interest in the interior lives of individuals in histories, novels, and the theater. Newspaper reports of the royal family intensified in intimacy and its members became moral exemplars-most often, paradoxically, when they misbehaved. Ad hominem attacks on political leaders became commonplace; politicians of all affiliations continued to assess one another's characters based on their success and daring with women and money. And newly popular human-interest journalism promoted the illusion that the personal characters of public figures could be read by appearances
The British monarchy and the French Revolution by Marilyn Morris( Book )

11 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 893 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

What prevented revolution in Britain during the French revolutionary era? How did George III's monarchy withstand republican challenges? This book examines the British monarchy - and the values, beliefs, and images attached to it - during the contentious decade of the 1790s. Through a wide-ranging exploration of loyalist and reform propaganda, newspapers, political caricatures, sermons, and records of prosecution for sedition and treason, Marilyn Morris arrives at a new perspective on the forces of social stability in Britain that prevented revolution and preserved the Crown. The monarchy, though tradition-bound, continually had to reinvent itself, Morris contends, and its modern incarnation emerged in the later years of George's reign with a style stressing personality, empathy, and domesticity, and a legitimacy based on the monarchy's embodiment of the nation's history. Morris's analysis of the monarchy's image and its incorporation into political argument during a time of upheaval provides new insight into how different institutions of the state protected and supported one another. Her discussion also places speculation about the imminent demise of the monarchy in the 1990s into perspective

Organic Isothiocyanates: Dietary Modulators of Doxorubicin Resistance in Breast Cancer( Book )

6 editions published between 2002 and 2004 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Drug resistance is the main cause for therapeutic failure and death in breast cancer. Our goal is to evaluate dietary organic isothiocyanates (ITCs) as inhibitors of MDR. Our studies have demonstrated that phenethyl ITC (PEITC), benzyl ITC (BITC) and naphthyl ITC (NITC) can inhibit P-glycoprotein-mediated efflux in cell lines that overexpress P-gp, as well as in cell lines that overexpress another MDR protein, Multidrug Resistance-associated protein (MRP1). Studies evaluating the mechanism of this interaction have suggested that PEITC is an inhibitor, but not a substrate for P-gp. ITCs inhibit MRP1 through binding interactions, as well as the depletion of the cofactor for transport, glutathione. HPLC assays have been developed to determine the concentrations of these ITCs in biological samples, and a novel LC/MS/MS assay developed for PEITC, in order to obtain the needed specificity and sensitivity for in vivo studies. The stability and pharmacokinetics of NITC and PEITC have been determined. Both NITC and PEITC exhibit dose-dependent disposition, with clearance decreasing with increasing dose. The bioavailability of PEITC was determined for the first time, and found to be excellent (>80%). The ITCs may represent a new class of inhibitors of MDR in breast cancer

Baptists and Britons : particular Baptist ministers in England and British identity in the 1790s by John Robert Parnell( )

2 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This study examines the interaction between religious and national affiliations within a Dissenting denomination. Linda Colley and Jonathan Clark argue that religion provided the unifying foundation of national identity. Colley portrays a Protestant British identity defined in opposition to Catholic France. Clark favors an English identity, based upon an Anglican intellectual hegemony, against which only the heterodox could effectively offer criticism. Studying the Baptists helps test those two approaches. Although Methodists and Baptists shared evangelical concerns, the Methodists remained within the Church of England. Though Baptists often held political views similar to the Unitarians, they retained their orthodoxy. Thus, the Baptists present an opportunity to explore the position of orthodox Dissenters within the nation. The Baptists separated their religious and national identities. An individual could be both a Christian and a Briton, but one attachment did not imply the other. If the two conflicted, religion took precedent

Phenethyl Isothiocyanate in Breast Cancer Prevention( Book )

4 editions published between 2004 and 2005 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Our hypothesis is that PEITC is an effective preventive agent in breast cancer. Although a number of mechanisms may be involved, one mechanism of PEITC effects that has not been explored is the potential for PEITC to alter the synthesis and elimination of estrogens. Our specific aims are: (1) to evaluate the efficacy of dietary PEITC, at relevant doses, in preventing or delaying the onset of breast cancer in estrogen-dependent breast cancer animal models, (2) to evaluate the effects of PEITC on 1 Theta-estradiol (E2) and metabolite (E2 sulfate, E2 glucuronide, estrone, 2-hydroxyE2, 4-hydroxyE2, 2- methoxyE2, and 4-methoxyE2) concentrations in plasma and tumor samples, and (3) to determine changes in enzyme activity and/or mRNA/protein expression in tumor and liver samples, for metabolic pathways which may be altered based on the E2 and E2 metabolite profiles. Our studies to date have characterized the pharmacokinetics of PEITC in rats (our animal model) and demonstrated in preliminary studies that PEITC can alter estrogen metabolism in the liver. Additionally, we found that low concentrations of PEITC can alter the expression of some genes important in breast cancer. These studies will provide new findings regarding the chemopreventive effects of the dietary compound PEITC in estrogen-dependent breast cancer
