This book is an open access publication. Forest ecosystems in Central Europe are changing as a result of anthropogenic influences and changing climate conditions. As such, a large-scale monitoring programme was undertaken in order to understand the influence of site modification, deposition of air pollutants, and climate. This book presents the scientific findings of this study for Germany, including the major challenges with regard to the future preservation and management of forest ecosystems under environmental change. In addition, it addresses a number of central questions: what are the main factors affecting forest stands and soil integrity? How, and how rapidly, are forest ecosystems changing? How diverse are the changes across Germany? What will be the main risks in sustainable forest management in the future? Eine nachhaltige, multifunktionale Forstwirtschaft hat den Anspruch, Wälder so zu pflegen und zu nutzen, dass deren Produktivität, Verjüngungsfähigkeit, Vitalität und biologische Vielfalt erhalten bleiben. In der Vergangenheit hat sich gezeigt, dass weder im Kielwasser der Rohholzerzeugung noch in jenem des Naturschutzes alle Waldfunktionen angemessen erfüllt werden. Die Integration eingeführter Baumarten in einen Waldbau auf ökologischen Grundlagen erfordert daher Kompromisse, die sich auf der Basis wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse in der Regel auch finden lassen. Konkret bedeutet dies, dass der Anbau nicht invasiver eingeführter Baumarten in gewissem Umfang vom Naturschutz ebenso akzeptiert wird, wie seitens der Forstwirtschaft naturschutzfachliche Interessen berücksichtigt werden, indem bei ihrem Anbau auf eine räumliche Ordnung geachtet wird und bestehende Vorkommen invasiver Baumarten zurückgedrängt werden. Ziel dieser Ausarbeitung ist es vor diesem Hintergrund, die Potenziale und Risiken von 15 eingeführten Baumarten auf der Grundlage wissenschaftlicher Literatur und langjähriger Forschungsarbeiten auf Versuchsflächen der verschiedenen Forschungseinrichtungen und Anbauflächen der Forstbetriebe aufzuzeigen, um die zwischen Naturschutz und Forstwirtschaft aufgekommene Diskussion zu versachlichen. Der Zustand der Waldböden hat begonnen, sich seit der ersten Bodenzustandserhebung (BZE I) in den 1990er Jahren langsam zu erholen. Ursache hierfür ist in erster Linie die Minderung der atmosphärischen Einträge insbesondere von Schwefel (S) und Blei (Pb) im Rahmen der grenzüberschreitenden Maßnahmen zur Luftreinhaltung. Zudem sind viele Böden aus Gründen des Bodenschutzes gekalkt worden und in den letzten 20 Jahren hat ein Umbau von Nadelwald-Reinbeständen zu Laub- und Mischbeständen stattgefunden. Beide Maßnahmen haben ebenfalls insgesamt positive Wirkungen auf den Waldboden. Basis für die Auswertungen der BZE waren deutschlandweit 1.900 Inventurpunkte. Die Außenaufnahmen der zweiten Bodenzustandserhebung (BZE II) fand von 2006 bis 2008, die Analytik von 2009 bis 2010 statt.

This working paper analyses instruments and measures to meet the targets set in the Germanys climate action plan 2050 for agriculture to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and for LULUCF to reduce greenhouse gas emissions or enhance sinks until 2030. In the focus are measures on the federal state level. For the different areas of actions and measures we discuss instruments and options for implementation, greenhouse gas mitigation potential, economic impacts, as well as impacts on employment, environment and health. The measures and implementation options analysed shall help to provide a better information basis for the planned portfolio within the pro-gram of measures to implement the German climate action plan. The working paper reflects the status of analysis from summer 2019. An update of the impact analysis of the current specification in the frame of the climate mitigation program 2030 of the federal government for the implementation of the climate action plan 2050 (Bundestagsdrucksache 19/ 13900; 11.10.2019) is not part of this paper and needs to be part of future research

The collaborative project analysed regional differentiated changes of extreme weather events in Germany and their impacts on agriculture including specialised crops and forestry. Analyses of weather station data from 1961 to 2013 of the German Weather Service as well as results of 21 climate model runs until 2100 show i. a. an increase of days with extreme heat which are expected to become more frequent in the future. Furthermore, an increase of days without precipitation in March and April as well as an increase of days with extreme drought in summer were observed. The latter are expected to increase in the future. Increasing heat and drought adversely affect in particular growth and crop harvest of arable cultures e. g. winter wheat. Extreme drought impairs especially the regeneration capacity in spruce and pine forests. For some extreme weather events that cause severe damages in particular in arable and specialised crops such as hail, extreme precipitation and late frosts further research need was identified due to missing observation data or unclear interactions between weather and vegetation. According to the results and in the light of various adaptation options there is currently no further necessity for governmental support of risk management systems

The "Winterberg" near Schierke (Harz Mountains, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany) is a hiking and skiing area with a gondola lift planned. An expert report was commissioned to prepare the regional planning procedure, as two previous reports reached conflicting conclusions regarding the impact of the planned infrastructure on the habitat types according to the EU Habitats Directive. This "working paper" publishes the third expert report which aimed at (1) unambiguous definitions to differentiate between bog woodland (priority habitat type 91D0) and acidophilous Picea forests of the montane to alpine levels (habitat type 9410), (2) applying these definitions to map these habitats within the study area, and (3) evaluate the intensity of impact of the present ski-slope and lift routing alternatives with regards to nature conservation as well as developing recommendations for future planning. To differentiate between the two habitat types within the study area we amended the mapping manual for habitat types according to the EU Habitats Directive of the Federal State Saxony-Anhalt by the criteria occurrence of peat and peat quality, i.e. a peat horizon ≥ 30 cm or < 30 cm with weakly decomposed (fibric) peat. Using these criteria we could map Picea bog woodland which deserves specific protection spatially explicitly and quantify the impact of the planned infrastructure. The methods do not contradict the comprehensive mapping manual of Saxony-Anhalt. However, the criteria allow in specific cases a more detailed differentiation of Picea bog woodland. [...]
