Alan Magee : Maine master( Visual )

2 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Alan Magee of Cushing is a modern master of realist painting. His paintings invite wonder at the inherent dignity and beauty of simple objects such as letters, tools, and stones that are imbued with a history of communication, labor, and time ... But [he] also produces another kind of work, his monotypes for which the test is to meet their gaze. The faces in these monotypes bear witness to the world's history of oppression and cruelty ... This portrait of Alan Magee is one of the on-going series of the Maine Masters Project, documentaries of Maine artists interviewed in their studios discussing their lives and work."--Container

His work was as eclectic as his interests, ranging from earrings to monumental installations, from abstract to figurative, from mythic and religious to representational homages to natural form. Throughout all of his work is the spirit of passionate engagement. Whether caught up in delight at the beautiful curling of a dried leaf or trying to understand the impulse of men to make war, Clark Fitz-Gerald reveled in telling the truth about what he discovered. He died in Castime in the Fall of 2004 at the age of 87

The many vessels he painted in his lifetime in Maine and on the shores of Europe make for an extraordinary fleet. Late in life as Thon's eyesight deteriorated due to macular degeneration, he moved away from color ... He ended up working almost exclusively in a rather stark palette of black, whites and grays ... He died in December, 2000, at the age of 94."
Olive Pierce: Maine master and ; Olive Pierce: Children of Iraq( Visual )

1 edition published in 2002 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Maine Master: "For photographer Olive Pierce the part is never more important than the whole, the individual more important than the community, and the photographer never as important as the people being photographed. Her black and white photographs document the spirit of community whether she finds it in high school kids (No Easy Roses), or among Maine fishing families (Up River), or with children in Iraq. She never sensationalizes. Instead, Olive Pierce seeks to portray the intersection of the dual mysteries of individuality and collective spirit, to make visible the fabric of community. Ms. Pierce received the Peace and Justice Award from the City of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and has won two Bunting Fellowships from Harvard."--Container
