Filming T.E. Lawrence : Korda's lost epics by Miles Malleson( Book )

11 editions published between 1996 and 1997 in English and held by 154 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The 1962 Spiegel-Lean Lawrence of Arabia was only the final, successful attempt to dramatize T. E. Lawrence's war adventures on screen; three decades earlier, in 1934, Britain's then premier film producer, Alexander Korda, had secured the film rights to Lawrence's book, Revolt In the Desert. So began Korda's four-year saga of attempts to film Lawrence's life in the face of opposition from the British government. Korda failed in his attempts, but the screenplay for the film was recently re-discovered and is reproduced here, forming the core of this book. It is a fascinating document, giving us a fresh interpretation of the character of T. E. Lawrence, as well as a version of events that is a graphic example of film makers at work under the threat of political censorship, exercised in this case by the British Foreign Office." "Leslie Howard was to play the part of Lawrence in this film. Also reproduced here is his illuminating account of how he planned to approach the role. In it he writes, 'I should like the picture, as it progresses, to take on the shape of a tragedy: the ultimate defeat of all Lawrence's ideals by the well-meaning, uncompromising machine of British government'. Remove the words 'well-meaning', and this could as well apply to the story told by the editors in their portrayal of the workings of British film censorship which contextualises the screenplay. They show how initially opposition came from Lawrence himself, and how after his death in 1935 Korda faced resistance from the Foreign Office responding to the government of Turkey, the country cast as villain in the Arab Revolt." "As a whole, Filming T. E. Lawrence presents a valuable case-study of British censorship in action, and new understanding of the role of the film industry in the life and politics of a nation."--BOOK JACKET

Abstract: This paper presents the results of an ex post evaluation of the impacts of a vehicle tax reform in Ireland, by carrying out a full social cost benefit analysis of a vehicle tax reform that began in Ireland in 2008 and shows that whilst successful in improving the fuel economy of new passenger cars, it may also have caused unintended effects, such as an increased proliferation of diesel vehicles in the passenger car fleet. These outcomes have mitigated the overall benefits. In addition to quantifying the scale of the various effects and outcomes, this paper clearly demonstrates the importance of broad scope policy design
