The moral judgement of the child by Jean Piaget( Book )

12 editions published between 1932 and 1997 in English and German and held by 631 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As a means of investigating moral judgments of children, the author analyzes the rules of the game of marbles and the development of respect for rules which children acquire. Piaget traces the consciousness of rules as it develops in children through four stages: (1) A task of simple individual regularity, (2) A motor pleasure egocentrism, (3) A social cooperation idea, (4) An interest in rules for their own sake. Relationships between the child's respect for the rules of a game and relations between the child and adults are shown. The study of moral values of the child was carried on by observation and interrogation. The origin of judgment of actions is traced to material consequences of an act and to intentions of an act. Moral realism is traced to causes peculiar to the spontaneous thought of the child and to causes brought by constraint by adults. Relations of cooperation tend to limit the constraint and obligatory rules. The theories of Durkheim, Fauconnet, Bovet, and Baldwin are discussed in the analysis of the child's moral judgments. The conclusions emphasize the need for education where individual experimentation and reflection carried on together aid and balance one another. -- from http://psycnet.apa.org (May 21, 2014)
The child's conception of physical causality by Jean Piaget( Book )

14 editions published between 1930 and 1972 in English and held by 203 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Child's Conception of Physical Causality, part of the very beginning of the ground-breaking work of the Swiss naturalist Jean Piaget, is filled with creative experimental ideas for probing the most sophisticated ways of thinking in children. The strength of Piaget's research is evident in this collection of empirical data, systematically organized by tasks that illuminate how things work. In his new introduction, Jaan Valsiner observes that Piaget had no grand theoretical aims, yet the book's simple power cannot be ignored. Piaget's contribution to developmental psychology was his "clinical method"--A tactic that integrated relevant aspects on naturalistic experiment, interview, and observation. Through this systematic inquiry, we gain insight into children's thinking."--Jacket
Judgment and reasoning in the child by Jean Piaget( Book )

1 edition published in 1968 in English and held by 69 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Childish reasoning is less deductive than ours and less rigorous, for logic is the art of proof. How are we to enquire into the nature of logical relations in children? The method employed in the present work consists in seeing how a child behaves when confronted with those conjunctions denoting causality or logical relations (because, for, therefore, etc.) Some deeply interesting results and conclusions are reached by this method of observation in a book which should appeal strongly to all those in any way connected with children
