Economic growth and convergence : global analysis through econometric and hidden Markov models by Michał Bernardelli( )

5 editions published in 2021 in English and held by 37 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"There are many different types of convergence within economics, as well as several methods to analyse each of them. This book addresses the concept of real economic convergence or the gradual levelling off of GDP per capita rates across economies. In addition to a detailed, holistic overview of the history and theory, the authors include a description of two modern methods of assessing the occurrence and rate of convergence, BMA-based and HMM-based, as well as the results of the empirical analysis. Readers will have access not only to the conventional econometric approach of beta convergence but also to an alternative one, allowing for the convergence issue to be expressed in the context of automatic pattern recognition. This approach is universal as it can be adapted to a variety of input data. The lowest aggregation level study investigates regional convergence through the case of Polish voivodships, where convergence toward the leader is tested. On a higher level of aggregation, the authors examine the existence of GDP convergence in such groups as the EU28, North Africa and the Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa, South America, Caribbean, South-East Asia, Australia and Oceania or post-socialist countries. For each group, the real beta convergence is tested with the use of the two above-mentioned approaches. The results are widely discussed, broadly illustrated, interpreted, and compared. The analysis allows readers to draw interesting conclusions about the causes of convergence or the drivers behind divergence. The book will stimulate further research in the field but conducted from the point of view of individual countries"--

Convergence in the tourism sector at the local level : empirical evidence from the EU regions by Mariusz Próchniak( )

1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this study, we verify the hypothesis of convergence in the tourism sector across the regions of the enlarged EU. The tourism sector is measured by four variables: arrivals of residents, arrivals of non-residents, nights spent by residents and nights spent by non-residents and measure the intensity of tourist visits in a given region. Our analysis covers 272 regions of the EU28 countries with the analyzed period 1995-2014. The original time series have been divided by the number of population to be expressed per thousand of inhabitants. The results indicate that the tourism variables were developing in line with the alfa- and beta-convergence hypotheses. The results for conditional omega-convergence give some additional information about the impact of the other determinants on the growth rate in the number and the length of tourist visits

Economic growth paths in the CEE countries and in selected emerging economies, 1993-2007 by Ryszard Rapacki( )

1 edition published in 2010 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This paper presents an empirical analysis of the economic growth paths in two groups of countries. The first group consists of ten Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries. The second group constitutes a benchmark and encompasses 29 emerging economies in other regions of the world. Our analysis covers the period 1993-2007. We aim to compare the growth paths of the CEE countries and the reference emerging economies. We use two econometric methods: income-level convergence analysis and growth accounting exercise. Th e main fi ndings are as follows. (1) Th e individual CEE countries and the CEE-10 group, as a whole, displayed a relatively rapid economic growth, compared with the remaining 29 emerging economies. (2) Our analysis does not confirm that fast economic growth of the CEE-10 countries (in comparison with the other emerging economies) resulted from the mechanism of absolute convergence. There were signs, however, that the former group was subject to a conditional beta convergence. (3) Rapid economic growth of the CEE-10 countries has been driven to a large extent by the increase of total factor productivity (TFP)
The EU Enlargement and Economic Growth In the CEE New Member Countries by Ryszard Rapacki( )

2 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This paper analyses whether EU enlargement contributed to economic growth and real convergence in the ten new member countries from Central and Eastern. In this paper, we aim to check whether the EU enlargement contributed to economic growth of ten new member countries from Central and Eastern Europe (CEE-10), including their real convergence towards the EU-15 development level. To this end, we econometrically test the relationships between selected macroeconomic variables linked to the EU enlargement and the rate of economic growth of the CEE-10 countries over the period 1996-2007. The variables comprise: (i) the progress of market or structural reforms, (ii) economic freedom, (iii) foreign aid, and (iv) the FDI inflow. In the first part of the study, we test the convergence hypothesis (both beta and sigma) for the CEE-10 group towards the EU-15 countries. In the subsequent parts, we build an econometric model and carry out the correlation and regression analyses, with a view to find out the possible effect of the EU membership on economic growth of the CEE countries. The last part of the paper develops possible scenarios of the real convergence of the CEE countries towards the EU-15. Our results indicate that the EU enlargement significantly contributed to economic growth of the CEE-10 countries and their catching up with the EU-15 development level. This conclusion has been supported by both the convergence analysis and the econometric test of economic growth determinants. According to our projections, the actual process of real convergence between individual CEE-10 economies and the EU-15 may take between 8 and 33 years."--Document home page
