Le colloque qui s'est tenu à l'Université d'Artois, les 20 et 21 octobre 2010, a cherché à définir, à partir d'exemples européens les plus divers et sur la longue durée, la nature du lien entre ce qui est du domaine de la vie privée et ce qui est rendu public. Il a souligné l'interdépendance entre le support médiatique et la constitution de l'individu : par le livre et l'écrit, l'homme moderne a bâti son intériorité. Il a montré que les frontières entre le public et le privé sont fluctuantes, soumises aux impératifs, comme aux aléas de la politique, des querelles religieuses et de la volonté affirmée de certains individus de s'inventer des parcours biographiques singuliers, que les exemples du chansonnier Béranger, de l'ambassadeur Esterhazy et de Proust sont venus éclairer. Il a montré que les femmes ont une approche différente de celle des hommes, peut-être parce que leur éducation les pousse à mieux respecter les normes de civilité. Mais si l'espace curial a longtemps permis une expression féminine assez libre, la Révolution les a ensuite exclusivement cantonnées dans le domaine de la vie sentimentale. La publicité donnée à des affaires sensibles - affaires de mœurs, querelles conjugales, adultères - montre que l'exposition médiatique de soi se fait par le biais du scandale. Le factum, ce mémoire judiciaire qui existe durant la période moderne et jusqu'à la fin du xixesiècle, est avec les Mémoires, les autobiographies et les correspondances, une source privilégiée, rendant compte des nombreux procès qui ont médiatisé ces affaires intimes. Les transformations des mentalités ont changé la nature de ce qui doit demeurer caché et de ce qui peut être exposé ; elles ont fait évoluer la législation : n'oublions pas que l'amitié était au xvie siècle ostentatoire, que l'on a pas hésité à étaler les anecdotes sur la vie sexuelle des rois, mais que toute transgression à l'échelle locale était sévèrement pourchassée...
