Prague soundscapes by Zuzana Jurková( )

2 editions published in 2014 in Undetermined and English and held by 812 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Prague Soundscapes is the first book focusing on music in Prague from other than musical-historical perspectives. It approaches musical events in present-day Prague from an ethno-musicological position, sometimes called musical anthropology. We take in, for instance, the Refufest festival, a punk concert at the Modrá vopice club, a performance of Dvorák's Rusalka at the National Theatre or accompany followers of the Hare Krishna and their procession through Prague - not just to see and ""hear"" their music, but also to learn who makes and listens to it and why. An abundance of photographs accom
The master of the Třeboň altarpiece by Jan Royt( Book )

2 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 102 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Master of the Trebon Altarpiece was a painter active in Prague in the fourteenth century and one of the most important gothic artists of the international style. He is named for his most famous work, a triptych depicting the death and resurrection of Christ, from an altar in a church in Trebon, a medieval town in the southern Czech Republic. Today, the masterpiece is in the collection of the National Gallery in Prague. Because little is known about this artist, scholars have ascribed to the Master various pieces of art, speculating about their dates of origin, their chronology, and their artistic and ideological points of departure. Art historian Jan Royt's extensive scientific research into the Master of the Trebon Altarpiece attempts to definitively identify and contextualize this unknown artist's oeuvre. Royt begins by outlining historical events in Bohemia during the last third of the fourteenth century, including the development of painting and religious atmosphere of the time. He then offers an artistic and iconographic analysis of works of the Master of the Trebon Altarpiece and his workshop and circle. The book closes with a detailed critical overview of art historians' views of the work of this medieval artist. With more than eighty color reproductions and illustrations depicting the results of a restoration survey of the panel paintings by the Master of the Trebon Altarpiece
Karel Teige : captain of the avant-garde by Rea Michalová( Book )

2 editions published in 2018 in English and held by 68 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Art theorist and critic, graphic designer, artist, author and translator Karel Teige is today recognized not just as the creator of internationally acclaimed surrealist collages, but also as a leading figure of the European avant-garde. Teige spent his entire life commenting on and interpreting developments in the visual arts. His multifaceted theoretical writings helped shape the conceptual foundations of modern art, and his activities and intensive contacts with other members of the European avant-garde helped secure Czech art's place on the international art scene. His work anticipated, initiated and helped to develop the progressive artistic movements that fundamentally influenced art in the 20th century. This comprehensive, nearly 800-page monograph, by the art historian Rea Michalová, takes a wide-ranging look at the evolution of Teige's ideological, theoretical and political views, and recalls important moments in his life and their significance within the international context. The book includes a rich set of illustrations, photographs from his life, and examples of his unique collages and graphic designs

Československé spartakiády by Petr Roubal( Book )

2 editions published in 2019 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Every five years from 1955 to 1985, mass Czechoslovak gymnastic demonstrations and sporting parades called Spartakiads were held to mark the 1945 liberation of Czechoslovakia. Involving hundreds of thousands of male and female performers of all ages and held in the world's largest stadium--a space built expressly for this purpose--the synchronized and unified movements of the Czech citizenry embodied, quite literally, the idealized Socialist people: a powerful yet pliant force directed by the regime. This book explores the political, social, and aesthetic dimensions of these mass physical demonstrations, with a particular focus on their roots in the völkisch nationalism of the German Turner movement and the Czech Sokol gymnastic tradition. Featuring an abundance of photographs, Spartakiads takes a new approach to Communist history by opening a window onto the mentality and mundanity behind the Iron Curtain
