The anatomy of humane bodies : with figures drawn after the life by some of the best masters in Europe and curiously engraven in one hundred and fourteen copper plates : illustrated with large explications containing many new anatomical discoveries and chirurgical observations : to which is added an introduction explaining the animal œconomy : with a copious index by William Cowper( Book )

2 editions published in 1698 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

William Cowper's The Anatomy of Human Bodies includes the original printings of 105 copperplates designed and printed in Holland for Govard Bidloo's Anatomia Humani Corporis (1685) by Gérard de Lairesse (1640-1711), a painter who rivaled Rembrandt in popularity in his time. While the plates were much appreciated, Bidloo's text was widely criticized, and because of this Cowper arranged to supply an entirely new and improved text in English to accompany a reissue of the original engravings, along with a new appendix with seven additional plates not in Bidloo. This reissue, published in an edition limited to 300 copies in Oxford in 1698, was the most elaborate and beautiful of all 17th century English treatises on anatomy. Cowper's new English text was also clearly superior, and became the basis for later editions, even those in Latin. Cowper, however, did not acknowledge Bidloo, even going so far as to paste over Bidloo's name with his own in the cartouche on the engraved allegorical title. This action resulted in a bitter plagiarism dispute between the two, one of the most famous in medical history. In 1700 Bidloo went so far as to publish his Gulielmus Cowper, criminalis literari citatus, coram tribunali attacking Cowper in considerable detail
