An Analysis of Elementary Pre-Service Teacher Attitudes Toward Two Different Methods Course Formats by Ava Pugh Van Landingham( Book )

1 edition published in 2001 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This study was conducted to determine if there were any differences in the opinions of preservice teachers about the effectiveness of a new block structure for elementary education and methods courses and opinions about the previous course structure. The new structure implemented in the 2000-2001 academic year reduced the courses in elementary education and methods from four to two and decreased the time for on-site field experiences. A total of 144 elementary education preservice teachers participated from fall 1999 through spring 2001. In general, attitudes about the degree of preparation for teaching dropped during the 2000 academic year but rose to equal or exceed those of fall 1999 by spring 2001. This pattern may reflect a period of adjustment for instructors or uncertainty on the part of students. The reduction in the number of courses apparently had only a temporary negative effect on student attitudes about preparation for the subject content areas. (Sld)
Elect her : still struggling to be recognized as equals by Fred Groves( Book )

2 editions published between 2019 and 2020 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In 1917, Canadian women were granted the right to vote. Over 100 years later, and despite the fact that this country has 52 percent women and 48 percent men, the fight to get equal representation in all levels of government continues. So what is it that prevents women from putting their name on the ballot and demanding an equal voice? 'Elect Her - Still Struggling to be Recognized as Equals,' takes an in depth look at those women who have overcome the barriers and have not only been elected but go on to have long and rewarding careers as politicians. This grassroots book highlights the careers of those who have been Federal Opposition Leaders and Cabinet Ministers to municipal councillors who are just learning what it's like to enter the political arena dominated by men. 'Elect Her' also explores women and their numerous organizations who continue to advocate for those who want a seat at the decision-making table."--
Cognitive Illusions as Hindrances to Learning Complex Environmental Issues by Fred Groves( Book )

1 edition published in 2000 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This study examined the effectiveness of an environmental science course for teaching college students about the ozone depletion problem. In the spring of 2000, students in the course, "Life in the Environment," were pretested and posttested with a 38-item questionnaire consisting of 3 sets of Likert-style statements plus multiple choice questions. The first set of questions focused on the results of ozone depletion. The second set focused on causes of ozone depletion. The third set targeted ways to lessen ozone depletion. Five of the multiple choice questions targeted factual information, and the last two focused on opinions. Overall, posttest scores were lower than pretest scores. Students showed a strong tendency to conflate cause and effect relationships between several different environmental issues which were really not related. This was especially pronounced for global warming and ozone depletion. The results reveal the difficulty in guiding students to construct proper concepts for complex subject matter by means of traditional, direct instruction methods. The questionnaire, which makes up the majority of the document, is appended. (Sm)

This paper examines the knowledge of high school biology students (n=107), undergraduate elementary education majors (n=42), and graduate students in an advanced elementary science methods course (n=22) about ozone depletion. The questionnaire used contained 30 items pertaining to ozone depletion which were divided into three subscales: (1) results of ozone depletion; (2) causes of ozone depletion; and (3) ways to alleviate ozone depletion. Results are analyzed according to the different groups studied: suburban high school students, urban high school students, undergraduate students, and graduate students. (Ccm)
