Visconti clearly identified with Don Fabrizio ('the Leopard'), the ageing patriarch of an aristocratic Sicilian family. He is the first to understand the inevitability of the changes. 'If everything is to remain the same, everything must change' is the cynical observation of Don Fabrizio's young nephew, Tancredi, who adjusts to the new order in a manner impossible for Fabrizio.
