In recent decades the development of unsaturated soil mechanics has been remarkable, resulting in momentous advances in fundamental knowledge, testing techniques, computational procedures, prediction methodologies and geotechnical practice. The advances have spanned the full spectrum of theory and practice. In addition, unsaturated materials exhibiting complex behaviour such as residual soils, swelling soils, compacted soils, collapsing soils, tropical soils and solid wastes have been integrated in a common understanding of shared behaviour features. It is also noteworthy that unsaturated soil mechanics has proved surprisingly fruitful in expanding to other neighbouring areas such as swelling rocks, rockfill mechanics, and freezing soils. As a consequence, geotechnical engineering involving unsaturated soils can be now approached from a more rational and systematic perspective leading towards an improved and more effective practice. Unsaturated Soils contains the papers presented at the 5th International Conference on Unsaturated Soil (Barcelona, Spain, 6-8 September 2010). They report significant advances in the areas of unsaturated soil behaviour, testing techniques, constitutive and numerical modelling and applications. The areas of application include soil-atmosphere interaction, foundations, slopes, embankments, pavements, geoenviromental problems and emerging topics. They are complemented by three keynote lectures and three general reports covering general issues of modelling, testing and applications. Unsaturated Soils is a comprehensive record of the state-of-the art in unsaturated soil mechanics and a sound basis for further progress in the future. The two volumes will serve as an essential reference for academics, researchers and practitioners interested in unsaturated soils

"This paper first presents a complete electoplastic constitutive model for unsaturated soils that incorporates recent developments in the field into the Barcelona Basic Model. The model is then studied in the framework of thermochemical principles. The incremental constitutive equations are reformulated for implementation in finite element codes where displacements and pore pressures are primary unknowns. At last, qualitative predictions of the model are compared with observed behaviour of unsaturaed soils". --p. 2

El desarrollo reciente de los ensayos "in situ" como herramienta de predicción de movimientos permite que proyectos complejos se afronten con rapidez, seguridad y fiabilidad. Un ejemplo es la metodología desarrollada para el cálculo de asientos en suelos blandos mediante dilatómetro de Marchetti (DMT) y piezocono (CPTu). Dicha metodología se ha aplicado sistemáticamente en el Proyecto de accesos a la Nueva Área Terminal del Prat (NAT), actualmente finalizando su construcción en el Prat del LLobregat. El objetivo principal de la tesina es explotar los datos de auscultación obtenidos en obra y compararlos con las previsiones del proyecto obtenidas a partir del programa de cálculo desarrollado, permitiendo así extraer conclusiones acerca de la validez de la metodología de cálculo empleada. Los pasos que se han seguido para la realización del estudio son los siguientes: · Familiarización con los procedimientos de ensayos "in situ" empleados en la obra: DMT y piezocono · Familiarización con la metodología de cálculo de asiento mediante ensayos "in situ" · Análisis y revisión de los datos provenientes de la instrumentación: placas de asiento, líneas continuas de asiento, extensómetros deslizantes e inclinómetros. · Comparación de los previsiones del modelo y los resultados de auscultación · Análisis de la importancia del asiento secundario dentro del asiento total de consolidación. · Conclusiones sobre la validez de la metodología aplicada ABSTRACT Key words: on-site testing, instrumentation, DMT, CPTu, methodology, settlement, validity The recent development of on-site testing as a prediction tool for soil movements allows complex projects to be carried out straightforward, with confidence and reliability. A relevant example can be found in the methodology developed for the estimation of settlements in soft soils using the Flat Dilatometer Test (DMT) and the Piezocone Penetration Test (CPTu). This methodology has been applied systematically in the project for the Nueva Área terminal del Prat (NAT), which construction is being completed this days in the Prat del Llobregat. The main objective of this work is to compare available data provided by on-site testing to the result of the calculations obtained by the method which was been developed, drawing conclusions on the validity of methodology which is been used. The steps which have been followed to perform this analysis are as follows: · Familiarisation with on-site test procedures used during the construction: DMT and CPTu. · Familiarisation with prediction method using on-site testing. · Analysis and revision of data provided by on-site testing: settlement plates, hydrostatic profile gages, sliding deformeters and inclinometers. · Comparison between model previsions and instrumentation results · Evaluation of the importance of the secondary settlement within the total settlement. · Conclusions on the validity of the methodology which is been applied

En estudios previos se ha comprobado que el efecto de arqueo es el mecanismo de transferencia de carga por el cual se puede evitar el colapso del relleno superior cuando un vacío se forma bajo el geosintético. Este trabajo investiga los efectos de la forma y tamaño del vacío formado en el mecanismo de arqueo del relleno. Concretamente, puesto que estudios previos consideraban la formación de un vacío de contornos verticales, este estudio se basa en el caso en el que los lados verticales del vacío tienen una cierta inclinación. Con este propósito, se realizó un estudio numérico basado en un modelo de elementos finitos, en el que se variaron la forma y tamaño del vacío, la inclinación de los contornos verticales, la secuencia de construcción, el ángulo de fricción y las propiedades que controlan la compactación del relleno. Los resultados se compararon con dos teorías de arqueo del suelo desarrolladas por Terzaghi (1943) y Hewlett & Randolph (1988). Se comprobó que la teoría de Terzaghi es más aplicable en general aunque la teoría de Hewlett & Randolph también es adecuada en algunos casos y predice resultados más precisos que para el caso de la formación de un vacío de contornos verticales. También se comprobó que el ángulo de fricción del relleno y las propiedades de compactación como la presión de succión son importantes parámetros de diseño para este tipo de estructuras
