Latinos : Remaking America by Marcelo M Suárez-Orozco( Book )

10 editions published between 2002 and 2009 in English and held by 983 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Latinos are the fastest growing ethnic group in the United States and will comprise a quarter of the country's population by mid-century. The process of Latinization, the result of globalization and the biggest migration flow in the history of the Americas, is indeed reshaping the character of the U.S. This landmark book brings together some of the leading scholars now studying the social, cultural, racial, economic, and political changes wrought by the experiences, travails, and fortunes of the Latino population. It is the most definitive and comprehensive snapshot available of Latinos in the United States today. How are Latinos and Latinas changing the face of the Americas? What is new and different about this current wave of migration? In this pathbreaking book social scientists, humanities scholars, and policy experts examine what every citizen and every student needs to know about Latinos in the U.S., covering issues from historical continuities and changes to immigration, race, labor, health, language, education, and politics. Recognizing the diversity and challenges facing Latinos in the U.S., this book addresses what it means to define the community as such and how to move forward on a variety of political and cultural fronts. All of the contributions to Latinos are original pieces written especially for this volume

Latin America and the world economy since 1800( Book )

5 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 559 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Latin American economies, once among the most productive in the world, were already falling behind the advancing economies of the North Atlantic by 1800. A century later, nearly all were "underdeveloped." In the twentieth century, most grew respectably but none managed to catch up. What explains these trends? How important were Latin America's changing relations with the evolving global economy? What hypotheses should be rejected or modified?" "The fifteen essays in this volume apply the methods of the New Economic History to the history of the Latin American economies since 1800. The authors combine the historian's sensitivity to context and contingency with modern or "neoclassical" economic theory and quantitative methods."--Jacket

What are the underlying factors behind China's competitive edge? What are the strategic implications of China's rise for growth and development in Latin America? These questions open new avenues for thinking about revitalizing development strategies in Latin America in the face of China's successful development and reduction of poverty. This insightful report is a must-read for analysts, policymakers, and development practitioners, not only in Latin America and the Caribbean, but wherever China's presence is being felt."--Jacket
Privatization for the public good? : welfare effects of private intervention in Latin America( Book )

3 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 262 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Most research on the effects of privatizations in Latin America has focused on efficiency or productivity gains rather than welfare issues, such as job losses, changes in general welfare, including access to public services, price reductions and quality improvement. The essays collected in Privatization for the Public Good put together a compelling picture of the direct welfare effects of privatization using unique household data sets for six Latin American countries

Unclogging the arteries : the impact of transport costs on Latin American and Caribbean trade by Maurício Mesquita Moreira( Book )

4 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 136 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The book explores the impact of transport costs on trade in Latin America and the Caribbean, and argues that transport costs have assumed an unprecedented strategic importance to the region. The region can no longer rely solely on trade agreements, proximity, labor costs and an abundant supply of natural resources to give it a competitive advantage in international trade. The book finds that countries in Latin America and the Caribbean have transport costs that are generally higher than those of the developed world, largely because of deficiencies in infrastructure and weak competition in shipping services. It concludes that a broader and more balanced trade agenda would bring the long neglected issue of transport costs to the center of the policy debate
Export pioneers in Latin America( Book )

4 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 125 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Analyzes a series of case studies of successful new export activities throughout the region to learn how pioneers jump-start a process leading to economic transformation. The cases of blueberries in Argentina, avocados in Mexico, and aircraft in Brazil illustrate how an initially successful export activity did not stop with the discovery of a single viable product, but rather continued to evolve. The book explores the conjecture that costly burdens to entrepreneurial self-discovery (due to the deterrent effects of imitation by competitors) have held back potential exporters in post-reform Latin America. It also considers the conjecture that new export activities are a complex enterprise that can only come to fruition when innovative contributions of many actors are somehow provided jointly
